Composting is an ancient and proven method of converting lef- tover organic garbage into top- notch, rich top soil that does wonders for your garden. Over the years many methods of composting have been tried and although most do work, some are much quicker and easier for backyard composting. One method is to simply pile the lef- tovers on the ground and wait (this takes about a year). Another is to contain the pile in a type of bin and periodically hand turn it with a shovel or fork. Although these traditional methods work, they require a great amount of physical labour as well as time. The newest, most effective, and easiest method for backyard com- posting is to use a rotating drum that allows both easy turning of the compost and frequent aera- 111 {040]23 4 V6 & V8 FALL TUNE-UP 4 & 6 CYLINDER §$ 508 sk Electronic Ignition ............ 87 Electronic Ignition ............ $65 ' * LABOUR ONLY, parts extra * Vans and Air-conditioned Vehicles, extra. It has been discovered that the decomposition process is much faster as the air supply is increased to the composting material. This is mainly because the bacteria that causes a com- post pile to break down, feeds on air, therefore the more air that reaches the compost material the quicker the composting process. Durham Region manufacturing firm, Workwel Products, has recently designed and produced an alternative to the old-fashioned compost pile or bin system. Through much research, Workwel Products found the public is willing to compost their household garbage however, an easier and faster method is need- ed for today's fast paced lifestyle. Based on this the principals of Workwel Products designed a composter for the backyard that works effectively and at the same time is quicker and less work than the traditional compost pile or bin composting system. The Workwel system allows easy rotation and aeration of the composting material thus produc- ing compost two or three times faster than the standard bin type of composting, with minimal effort. Concern for the environment is important these days and recycl- ing our household waste is a way we can contribute as individuals. As an added bonus, composting at home can save you money.
