In total, 169 contestants com- peted in the 4 divisions. DURHAM EAST 4-H AT BLACKSTOCK FAIR Five Durham East 4-H clubs held their 1990 Achievement Days at the recent Blackstock Fair. In the 4-H Sheep Show, Gena Jasper-Fayers was Champion Showman and Jeff Kemp was Reserve Champion Showman. East agri-news Lamb was shown by Mark Bragg and the Reserve Champion Lamb was shown by Gena Jasper- Fayers. The 4-H Sheep Club was led by Jim Coombes and Shelley Holliday. In the 4-H Beef Show, Jeff Beckett was the Champion Showman and Penny Beckett was the Reserve Champion Showman. The Champion Calf was shown by Jeff Beckett and the Reserve Champion Calf by Paula Pascoe. The 4-H Beef Club was under the ~ leadership of Gerry Cornish and Wayne Beckett. As their Achievement Project, the 4-H Swine Club conducted a short quiz on the modern pork in- dustry for all who visited the Pork Producers' booth. All who par- ticipated were eligible to take part in a draw for some of the Pork Producers' promotional items. The 4-H Swine club was led by Bill and Ken Lamb. In addition, the 4-H Field Crops Club under the leadership of Dave Tamblyn and Ian Andrews and the Blackstock 4-H Horticulture Club under the leadership of Marilyn Green and Gail Johns, displayed samples of the members' projects. All 4-H members and leaders taking part in Blackstock Fair are to be commended for their ex- cellent projects. GRANTS FOR BEEF PRODUCERS For beef producers enrolled in the Red Meat II Program, capital facilities grants are now available for fence construction and repair and pasture watering facilities. The grant will apply to any pur- chases made on/after April 1/90. To qualify under this new sec- tion, producers must meet the minimum requirement for hand]- ing facilities. This includes a holding pen, working chute and headgate. Under the new section some of the eligible materials for con- struction and repair of fences iri- clude posts, wire, staples, testers and energizers, insulators and ground rods. Equipment for watering cattle on pasture in- cludes water line, waterers, (troughs, bowls, nose pumps and hydraulic rams), portable water tanks and float mechanisms.
