12 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, September 25, 1990 Letters io the editor Dump sites add insult to injury To the Editor: Cartwright Township - This pic- turesque farming community (Ward 4 of Scugog Township) sits at the extreme north-east corner of Durham Region - its northern boundary being Lake Scugog, eastern boundary Victoria County. Until the formation of regional government in 1974, Cartwright was a financially sound township. That changed when forced regional amalgamation occurred and Cartwright municipal taxes were used to subsidize Durham Region programs. Througli the next sixteen years Cartwright residents paid more than their fair share of municipal property taxes, approximately 75% of which go to the Region of Durham and the Durham Public or Separate School Boards. Cartwright has received astronomicai increases in municipal taxes and yet there have been no increases in regional services to justify these increases. Perhaps because of Cartwright Township's extreme distance from Durham Regional Head- quarters, it was felt that Cart- wright could be ignored. BUT WAIT! - Now Cartwright has finally gained the interest of Durham Region ... finally some recognition. Apparently there are two sites in Carlwright (both prime agricultural land; one on Highway 7A east of Nestleton; the other the cross-roads of the Shirley Road and Old Scugog Road, only one mile south of Blackstock, where Cartwright children attend school) that are potential long-term dump sites for Durham Region. How's that for adding insult to injury (and neglect). On the positive side, there are usually large sums of money in- volved to compensate for the in- convenience of accepting so- meone else's garbage. Perhaps Cartwright will receive its much needed road repairs. And there have been rumblings about ex- panding the Blackstock Arena to regulation size. .. Also the devaluation of proper- ty located near dumpsites, pro- perty (and resale) value in Cart- wright will decrease and municipal taxes should fall. And Scugog Township Council Certificates D.J. The construction of a new municipal office building has been discussed, and Scugog Cen- tre has been put on hold due to a lack of municipal funds. Well, the money tree may have been found and things could change. Port Perry could have its new multi-million dollar sports complex and Cartwright (like the sacrificial lamb) could have the Durham DUMP! Cartwright Township was sold once in 1974 - Don't let it happen again! Urge Scugog Township Council to speak out against this proposal now. Call the Scugog Municipal Office at 985-7346. Voice your concerns to Scugog Mayor Howard Hall, Regional Councillor Yvonne Christie, Cart- wright (Ward 4) Councillor Glenn Malcolm, or any other Scugog Township Councillor. Sincerely, Valerie Ellis, Cartwright (Ward 4) Scugog Township No Sunday To the Editor: I realize that I was remiss in my Letter to the Editor (Sept. 18, 1990), for not acknowledging that Dowson's Valu-Mart has also made the decision to refrain from Sunday openings. I was, at the time, responding to an advertise- ment placed by 1.G.A. in your paper announcing that they would remain closed on Sundays. I wish to commend the manage- ment of both establishments for their decision to provide their staff and the community with the opportunity to continue to observe Sunday as a "pause day."
