26 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, September 25, 1990 Proposed landfill site shocks Our community was shocked to learn over the weekend that Cart- wright has been selected for the location of two of the five "test sites' for the new Durham Region landfill site. There will be an in- formation meeting tonight Tues- day, September 25 at 7:30 p.m. at the Rec Centre. This will be an op- portunity to learn the facts rather than the many rumours that are circulating. Many residents enjoyed the In- ternational Plowing Match held this week in the Paris area. Twelve counties entered the Horseshoe Pitching Contest. It is of little surprise that Roy and Harold McLaughlin representing Durham won first place. Another trophy for their wives to polish. Better health is wished for Mrs. Belle Werry who is in Port Perry Hospital following a fall at home. The Blackstock Square Dancers are reminded that dan- cing begins at the Old Town Hall this Thursday evening, September 27 at 8 p.m. Nancy Bryans was surprised with a birthday party to celebrate her 50th birthday on Saturday at the Caesarea Hall. This party was arranged by her husband Bob, son Gord and Deb Bryans and daughter Patti and Rick Alpe. About 50 friends and relatives joined Nancy for this special oc- casion. Nancy also received a phone call from her pen pal with whom she also corresponded tor the past 37 years, Deana and Ken Halligan from Granger, Iowa. Happy Birthday, Nancy. Sherry and Leon Slute hosted a birthday party in honour of their son Justin's first birthday. Guests were his grandparents Ross and Marie Tysick of Blackstock, Cecil and Doris Slute of Raglan, Linda Powell of Columbus, Donnie Fell and Michael of Raglan, Sandra and Stuart Darnley and family of Brougham, and Janet and Keith Fraser and family of Port Perry. A very happy family gathering. Peter Hill has returned home from a three week visit to War- saw, Poland where he represented Canada at the 11th World Aeromodelling Champion- ships for Scale Model Airplanes. I am sure that Peter has some in- teresting stories to tell of his trip to Poland. The Second annual Blackstock Octoberfest will be held atthe Blackstock Recreation Complex this Saturday, September 29th. There will be a family hour from 2-4 p.m. with the Junior Band and later a dinner and dance from 5-1 a.m. for $10 per person. This party which was a complete surprise to Barbara was organized by Jim and their children Blaine and Bristol. On Friday evening another suc- cessful auction was held when tools and other items of the late Frank Hoskin were sold by Harvey Graham, auctioneer at the arena. Morning Unit U.C.W. On Wednesday, September 19 twelve members of the Morning Unit met at the home of Gwenyth Thompson. After the usual half hour of coffee, food and friendly conversation, Unit Leader Peggy Larmer opened the meeting with a poem "Beauty" about thoughts to think about when a day is go- ing all wrong. The minutes of the May meeting and a report of the June excursion were read and adopted. The treasurer reported that $997.50 (receipted from the Stew supper and enveloped from May) had been handed to the general treasurer. Eleanor Werry thank- ed the unit for flowers sent to her at the time of her father's death.
