Pine Ridge juniors hos The second Junior Garden Club Convention held on Sept. 22nd at the Nestleton Hall brought out a good number of participants from our District #17, with a total of 46 children in attendance. Miss Anne Bourke, District Director welcomed everyone and then introduced the Guest Speakers, Mayor Howard Hall and MPP Gordon Mills. Mayor Hall and Mr. Mills congratulated the children on their imagination and horticultural abilities and what they can contribute to help our environment. Joshua Malcolm gave a greeting for the Host Society, Pine Ridge Garden Club. Mavis Brodie then introduced her Pirate Crew who were leading the Treasure Hunt. There were two teams and two trails with clues to follow and at the end of each trail the treasure was two trunks with loonies in them. Many thanks to Miss Bourke for obtaining the loonies from the Bank of Nova Scotia and the Bank for their donation. Out of seven Junior Garden Clubs, there were four clubs who entered in the Competitions, Orono, Cannington, Pine Ridge and Newcastle. The theme of the competition was "Nature's Treasure' in three age groups. The various classes were - An Ar- rangement depicting a Fairytale, A Greeting Card, a Seed Picture, a Vegetable Character and a Dispiay of five Vegetables Grown in your Garden. District Trophies were presented to the top winners in each age group. Recipients were Age 5-8 Kristy Coates. Age 9-12 Andrea Etmanskie. Age 13-16 Brenna Love. Kristy Coates, Pine Ridge Garden Club won the Ontario Hor- ticultural Assoc. Plaque for the most points overall in any age group. After a lovely lunch we were entertained by the Kitchen Band and what fun was had when they passed out their various homemade instruments and led us in a musical sing-along. Mrs. Jean Foss, O.H.A. judge who judged the various competitions, talked to the children & explain- ed what to watch for and to study the competition schedules and to follow the instructions carefully. Miss Anne Bourke spoke to the children on Annuals from seeding to blooming and Mrs. Shirley Love talked about her "Cactus People" and the care of growing cacti. Winners were then an- nounced for the Treasure Hunt and the Competitions. The trophies and cash awards were presented to the competition entrants. Miss Bourke then handed out T Shirts donated by the Marketing Group of the Toronto Dominion Bank. These shirts are printed with the Trillium Logo, Ontario Horticultural Assoc. Junior Gardeners 1990. Dairy championship show Forty-one 4-H members par- ticipated in the annual 4-H Dairy Championship Show held at Beaverton Fair on Friday, September 14. The Showmanship and Conformation classes were carefully analysed by Judge Hugh Fawcett from Winchester. Rob Raines from the Sunderland 4-H Dairy Club was named Grand Champion Showman. Wendy Evans from the Uxbridge Dairy Club received Reserve Champion Showmanship Honours. Champion Holstein calf and Grand Champion calf of the show was a Junior Yearling exhibited by Wendy Evans from the Ux- bridge 4-H Dairy Club. Mark Ir- win, also of the Uxbridge Club, showed the Reserve Champion Holstein, the first place Summer Yearling. The Champion Jersey calf was shown by Rob Ashton, Uxbridge Club, and Reserve Champion by Darin Bacon of the Port Perry Club. The Sunderland 4-H Dairy Club won the Champion Group of Three Heifers, exhibited by Ian McFadden, Derek Molenaar and Bill Raines.
