Motorsports National Stock Car Series made its final stop of the year at Muspurt International Speedway last weekend and it took 200 laps of bumper to bumper and door han- dle to door handle racing to finally crown a series champion. Taking the green flag in tenth position, Randy MacDonald, the Oshawa resident, survived a total of 9 yellow flags and an attrition rate that claimed almost f the field to finish sixth, garnering enough points in the process to earn the series title. Russ Urlin, the defending G.M. Series champion won the event with a comfortable nine second cushion over MacDonalds main challenger, American driver, Robbie Crouch. "1t would have been nice to win the race but the champion- ship is very important. I backed out a little bit so as to not jeopar- dize our chance at the title. It's been a great year for the A C Delco Buick team and for us to win it all in my own backyard really caps off the season," exclaimed an exuberant MacDonald. Several local racers also entered the American Canadian Tour (ACT) event with varying degrees of success. Regular Mosport Late Model competitors John Greedy, Mike Bricknell, Rod Sauder and Terry Robichaud all entered the fray but were knocked out of the running by a variety of problems. Dave Taylor in the Jerry's Truck Service Lumina had pro- blems as well when he brushed the fourth turn wall in his heat race but was ready to roll when the order came to start the engines. During the feature, Taylor was running as high as twelfth when he encountered more difficulties. "I ran over some garbage in the second turn and had the right front tire explode. We came in and got that fixed and went back out again only to find the rear tire was going down too." The Caesarea driver quickly resolved the problem and ran a strong race to the finish ending up 16th overall, albeit minus his hood and front fender. "The season is almost over," sighs wife Kathy, '"We'll just have to pop rivet the pieces back on for two more weekends." Watch for Dave to compete in all of the Canadian events on the ACT calender next year. By the way, if you couldn't get to the race, it will be telecast on the CTV network on October 27th as part of the G.M. Motorsports Hour. : : To finish out this week's column we have a few thoughts and impressions from the first annual Vancouver Molson Indy. First of all, Thumbs Up for a beautiful setting with the har- bour of False Creek in the foreground and the mountains set- ting the backdrop. Thumbs Up for the sunshine on raceday after two days of rain and mist. Thumbs Up for the event setting a Canadian race attendance record. . Thumbs Up to Al Unser Jr. on his fourth consequetive CART victory, a new record. A big Thumbs Up to a superb drive by Toronto's Scott Goodyear who finished an Indy Car career best 7th in spite of a big problem. "I was running with a pack and holding my own when Rahal and then Mario went past me. The problem was that the on-board camera has its transmitter in the nose of the car and somehow the connecting cable worked loose and got tangled up in the beiials. I just couldn't push the throttle far enough to hold them off!!! / And finally Thumbs Up to Communications Director Sid Priddle for allowing me the credéntials to work with the big boys in the Media Centre. Thank You. Unfortunately, in spite of all the great things that happen- ed in Vancouver, this race will be always remembered for one tragic incident. : While helping push the stalled car of first time Indy com- petitor Ross Bentley, three corner workers were struck down by the racer of Willy T. Ribbs. One man, 20 year old Jean Patrick Hein of Montreal, eventually succumbed to his injuries. An ac- cident, in the truest meaning of the word, there can be no fingers pointed at fault and no blame honestly placed. It was an instinc- tive reaction move by the veteran race marshall, the only error made was that the man reacted in the wrong direction. The thoughts of the racing fraternity go out to the Hein fami- ly, for everyone involved in racing is aware of the necessity and value of the marshalls. To lose one in this fashion is a blow felt throughout the entire racing community.
