36 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, October 10, 1990 Milk markets up in August Total milk marketings to the Board were up 4.2 percent in August 1990 compared to August 1989. This continues the positive comparisons which started in May. Comparisons will likely con- tinue to be positive throughout the fall months if for no other reason than marketings a year ago in the fall months were down five to six percent compared to 1988-89. Production this fall is expected to be much closer to those levels experienced two years ago. That is good from the perspective of having closer to adequate sup- plies for processors this fall. Based on Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food statistics, the provincial cow population as of June was down 3.2 percent to 399,000 compared to a year earlier. Estimated freshenings based on Al information appear to be roughly even or slightly up from the fall of 1989. With the three percent reproduction in MSQ on Aug. 1, 1990 and a relatively strong milk supply, it is probably not too ear- presents an INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION Mannheim Germany Port Perry Precision Construction Midgets at the SCUGOG ARENA 8:00 PM - MONDAY, OCTOBER 22nd, 1990 Adults $3.00; High School Students $1.00: Family Rate $5.00 Please note that regular passes are not valid for this special event. ly to suggest that the year-end quota situation will be tight next July. Demand for milk and dairy pro- ducts will be monitored closely throughout the year, including a review at the September meeting of the Canadian Milk Supply Management Committee in Ot- tawa. Based on current trends, there is nothing on the horizon that would suggest a need to in- crease MSQ. In fact, maintaining the current level of MSQ is realistically the best that can be hoped for. Class 1 sales ended the 1989-90 dairy year virtually even with sales from a year earlier. August was a good month with adjusted sales up 0.6 percent. The Class 1 price was increased at the begin- ning. of September. There are many reports of the retail price going up by between 50 to 70 cents for a four-litre pouch pack, despite the fact that the producer - price only went up by 10 cents for four liters. How long high prices stay in effect and their impact on sales remains to be seen. HOCKEY FORDER-PARKS INSURANCE BROKERS INC. 34 Water St., Port Perry, Ont. This nuisance factor alone will inhibit your smoking enough to reduce it by one-third. Carry whole cloves or sugarless gum where you normally carry your cigarettes. ¥ Carry a small note pad so you can doodle or sketch while having a beverage -- see if you can wait another 15 minutes. ¥ Play solitaire before you go to bed instead of having that last smoke. ¥ Puff on an unlit cigarette while driving, reading or watching TV. ¥ Don't offer cigarettes to other people and don't accept cigarettes, just say "no thanks." ¥ Get rid of all ashtrays. Use a pop bottle and don't empty it. Ply Your local Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario chapter has details on quitting.
