Councillor Nicholson said the region should get legal advice on the board's actions, stating it could be a violation of provin- cial law. "Whitby Mayor Bob Attersley said the private meeting may have been 'improper' and therefore the notice of termina- tion could be null and void. Chairman Aker said a letter to the region from Durham Re- cycling manager Glenda Gies was "as blunt as a sledgeham- mer to the head." It stated the original termi- nation date of October 31 would have to be extended one month in order to provide their staff with appropriate notification of termination of employment. Chairman Aker said that meant operations were winding down and no negotiations were in the works. But at the last combined meeting when the termination date was extended to next year, both sides agreed to meet every other month until July, he told council. PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, October 10, 1990 -- 3 Recycling staff out of work November 31 John Cherry, national repre- sentative of CUPE, told council that workers were "promised a bonus if they stayed until the end of the term" because the (Durham Recycling board) "want togooutin style." The termination letter stated that if workers stay until No- vember 31, salary and benefits will continue, perfect atten- dance will be rewarded with a 15 per cent bonus on earnings before overtime, and they will 'be entitled to vacation pay. Outside council chambers, Mr. Cherry told reporters it ap- pears to be a marriage that's gone sour between Durham Re- cycling and the region. "Somebody somewhere has $2 Tuake a Qaczgion he said at's goi to happen to these wo orel" "Its a great Christmas present," he said about the ter- mination in this time of a poor economy. "Everyone needs to work." Although politicians stated the blue box program would not be lost, Mr. Cherry said it would be politically foolish for them to stop the popular pro- gram when "landfill is one of the biggest issues in Durham." He said the best solution would be for the region to take care of recycling pick up and if not, then Durham Recycling should continue its operations. Even though the regi ok iticians seemed concerned that the board's actions were not le- gal, Mr. Cherry said he did not come away from the council meeting feeling that the em- ployees would be looked after. The Star could not reach Dur- ham Recycling chairman of the board Gerry Emm for com- .ment. The waste management com- mittee will reconvene for an emergency meeting once legal information is obtained, waste chairman said.
