by Ross Stevenson, M.P., Durham In 1988, I ran in the federal elec- tion to represent the residents of Durham riding. In representa- tions in Caucus, committees and | the House of Commons, I have stated the opinions of my consti- tuents to the best of my ability. For example, my views on issues such as the environment and agriculture are a matter of public record through press releases, householder mailings, and the reports of committees in the House of Commons. Because of my position on the environ- ment, I was recently appointed chairman of the special commit- tee studying Bill C-78, an Act to establish a Canadian environmen- tal assessment process. important budgetary U. I1.P. helps grads One of the hardest decisions a senior high school student must make is to describe what to do after graduation. Ontario's universities, in a cooperative effort with the pro- vince's secondary schools, established the University Infor- mation Program (U.I.P.) to help students explore university éducation. Representatives from each of the 15 Ontario Universities, Ryer- son Polytechnical Institute and the Royal Military College visit every region of Ontario to provide first-hand information on pro- grams of study, admission re- quirements, costs and financial aid, housing/residence, student life and campus visits. In some cases, attending the U.LP. session will be a student's only opportunity to meet per- sonally with representatives from certain universities. We can all appreciate the dif- ficult decision students face in choosing post-secondary paths and the importance of making an educated choice. The U.L.P. program in this area will be hosted by the Durham Board of Education at: a) Picker- ing H.S., 180 Church St. N., Pickering -- Wednesday, October , 24, 1990 - 7:30 p.m. - 9:40 p.m. b) Eastdale C.V.1., 265 Harmony Rd. This was passed by the House of Com- mons in 1989. It involves approx- ' imately $1 hillion in revenues, but the Senate won't let it go through. - I voted to change the unemployment insurance system so that we could pay people to re- train instead of staying home. This was passed by the House of Commons in 1989, but the Senate won't let it go through. - I voted for a package of measures to cut government spending by billions of dollars. This was passed by the House of Commons, but the Senate won't let it go through. In total, the unaccountable Senate is holding up budgetary bills, including the GST, involving in excess of $8 billion per year, completely thwarting the attempt of the government and the elected. House of Commons to reduce the budgetary deficit of our country. You will notice the extent of the delay since two of the major items above were in the 1989 budget and we're soon coming up to the 1991 budget. Any government at any level, present or future, must be able to carry out its economic programs with no more than moderate in- terference by other authorities.
