Police Chief will look into 'social prejudice charges by Judge Durham Region Police Chief Dave Edwards has or- dered a full investigation into criminal charges eight years ago, and subsequent civil pro- ceedings against three Regional Police officers. In a statement issued Octo- ber 26, Chief Edwards said he is greatly concerned about a re- cent court decision by Madam Justice Helen King MacLeod, in which $40,000 was awarded an Oshawa man and a woman. Judge MacLeod accused the Regional Police of "social prejudice" and engagingin "rep- rehensible conduct" during the arrest of a man and woman in July, 1982. The Jude awarded the damages to Edward Vaillan court and Carol (Knopf) Lines. Vaillancourt was beaten and kneed at the time of the ar- rest and had his shoulder dis- located. He was charged and later fined $300 for dangerous driv- ing. Vaillancourt, 42 at the time, was driving a motorcycle with Carol Knopf as a passen- The motorcycle was rammed by a police cruiser. In awarding the damages, Judge Macleod said the three officers, Dennis Omeanchuk, Gary Greenly and James Wat- son, got "caught up in the thrill of the chase. They thought Vail- lancourt was a criminal fleeing the scene of a crime, but they did not know the facts." The Judge also said had Vaillancourt been dressed in a business suit, instead of work clothing, "I doubt he would have received the same treatment." In responding to the judge- ment handed down last week in court, Chief Edwards said the Durham force will seek legal ad- vice on whether to appeal the decision. "I wish to assure the public that the Durham Police are committed to the fair and im- partial administration of jus- tice. This force does not condone any conduct which might com- promise this principle," he stat- ed. Vaillancourt is the owner of a large and successful plumbing company in Oshawa. Meet with Transport Minister From Page 1 Mr. Pagnuelo and members of the Passenger Association. They are hoping for a defi- nite answer this coming Mon- day. With the cost of gasoline on the rise, parking prices in To- ronto going up and winter com- ing on, the Passenger Assoc. feels the commuter service (with a stop in Myrtle for Scu- gog residents) has never been needed more. While Mr. Pagnuelo ac- knowledges the NDP govern- ment has major problems with a projected $2.5 billion deficit, he points to an independent study last spring which showed commuter service between To- ronto and Peterborough could be economically viable. He notes the tracks and stations are already in place and GO-Transit apparently has passenger cars in storage that could be pressed into service if the government gives it the green light. MoJacks have nine wallets stolen from dressing room The Port Perry ModJacks lost more than a hockey game Saturday night at the Scugog Arena. Some time during the first riod of action, a thief (or thieves) hit their dressing room and walked off with wallets be- longing to nine of the players. The loss included about $240 in cash, drivers licences and credit cards. The dressing room had been left un-locked for a very short period of time when the thefts occurred. Team officials called Re- gional Police to the Arena im- mediately after the thefts were discovered at the end of the first period. On the ice, the ModJacks lost the game 9-8 to the visiting Bowmanville Eagles. LADIES SAPPHIRE and DIAMOND 10 KT.
