EI 1991. TN Ron Lace of the Birdseye Centre Carvers Club will be just one of the many club members displaying carvings at their annual Show and Sale this Sunday, November 4 at the Black- stock Rec Centre. Ron's carving of a Ruffed Grouse (photo) recently won 1st prize in both the World's Open Competition and In the Jack Miners Migration Festival. (See story) Ontario Hydro to raise rates January by 8.6% Ontario Hydro will be in- « creasing electricity rates by 8.6 per cent, starting in January, That's the increase Hydro will charge the 312 municipal utilities for power. For the average household- er it will mean an increase of be- tween eight and nine per cent. This will be about $5 on a monthly hydro bill of $65, which is the average now in Ontario. But these increases are just for the cost of power. Consu- mers will see an even bigger hike in the bills when the feder- al Goods and Service Tax of sev- en per cent is added to the bills, . if the GST is passed by January 1 as the Government wants. In announcing the increase last week, Ont. Hydro's presi- dent Robert Franklin conceded the 8.6 hike is more than the 7.8 per cent both Hydro and the On- tario Energy Board wanted last COMPARE THE RATE! 165 QUEEN ST, PORT PERRY 985-8435 i FIRE Ee at A £ = 3 August. However, Franklin said the new increase was due to several factors including wage settle- ments, higher prices of equip- ment and higher interest rates. He also noted that the ten- sions in the Middle East which have driven up the cost of oil, are "a concern" to Hydro. Large industrial users who get their power directly from Ontario Hydro are facing rate hikes of 7.8 per cent in 1991, and likewise residential cus- tomers in rural areas of the province serviced directly by the utility. They will be hit with increases of 8.7 per cent. This is the fifth time in 17 years that the rate increase for power has been higher than the recommendation of the Ontario Energy Board. :. | Pre-Christmas Sale A TYPEWRITERS WORDPROCESSORS Smith-Corona Brother JENKINS BUSINESS EQUIPMENT ..| 728-7591 985-9783 "| Sales-Service-Rentals | Lay-away for Christmas TITRE.
