Letters io the editor Soccer Club could fold To the Editor: 1990 marked the 25th year for Scugog Youth Soccer Club, and an excellent year it was. Over four hundred children had the oppor- tunity to play soccer this year, on teams that ranged in age from four to over eighteen. Our select teams had very successful seasons, holding their own at all of the tournaments they entered, often against teams from much larger centers. In fact, the 8 and under Squirt Selects were the Durham Cup Winners, the best in the region. What a shame that our best season ever may also be our last. On Sunday, November 18, the annual general meeting was held in the Anglican Church Hall. At this time, the new executive for 1991 was to be elected, and plans made for next year's season. Un- fortunately, due to lack of in- terest, there were not enough peo- ple in attendance to form a quarum, and those who were pre- sent made the painful decision to fold the organization and turn over their operating budget to charity - unless enough members of our community come out to support soccer in this town at the re-scheduled general meeting, which will take place on Thurs- day, December 6 at 7:30 p.m.. This letter is my appeal to you, the people of Scugog, to help keep soccer alive in this town. As the parent of four boys who have been involved with soccer in the past, I can speak first hand of how valuable soccer has been for my family. Not only is it fun, but it is a good source of physical exer- cise. It is extremely inexpensive - last year, for $35.00 a child, each player received a complete uniform, which is theirs to keep when the season in over, plus both team and individual photos, plus trophies on Cup Day, plus one night a week for practice time and one game a week, always held at the same location - compare this to hockey, with its high sign-up fee (which is necessary to pay for the ice time) for which your child gets to borrow a sweater for the season, and the parent gets the pleasure of driving to different locations at different times whenever ice time becomes available, plus the additional charge for all of the necessary equipment, plus the never-ending fundraising and you cannot help but see what a deal the soccer season has been in the past. However, in order to keep the soccer club in operation ., a great deal of work has to take place behind the scenes. Yes, people are needed to be coaches and referees during the actual soccer season, but what we tend to forget is that volunteers are also needed long before the season gets underway. People to draw up the playing schedules, to place the children on the teams, to order the uniforms, repair the nets, blow up the balls - all the little things that we, the parents, tend to take for granted. All we care about are the actual games themselves, and we tend to forget all the preparation that is necessary behind the scenes. So- meone has to take on these jobs, and for too long the same group of individuals have shouldered the entire burden while the rest of us have reaped the benefits and con- tributed nothing but our registra- tion fees. It's time that we chip- ped in to help in the actual runn- ing of the club. I attended Sunday's meeting, because I feel that it is time that I paid back for some of the enjoy- ment my children have had over the last three years, and I am still prepared to help in any way I can. I know I can't bea coachor a referee - I don't know enough about the rules of the game for that. But I can help keep the snackbar running, or make up the teams, or any of the other hun- dreds of small jobs that need to be done. And I will. The question, however, is - will you? Scugog Youth Soccer Club needs you. If we do not throw our support behind this hard-working core of individuals who have kept soccer alive in this community for the last 25 years, the 1990 season will have been our last. Please don't let this happen. Come out on December 6 and show that you care about keeping soccer alive in Port Perry. No matter how much, or how little time you feel you can contribute to the organization, your help is essential to keep the club in existence. Don't wait un- til it is too late, and the club has been forced to close up shop, before you say 'Oh, I would have helped, but nobody asked me."' I am asking you, here and now. Don't let this be the summer that the soccer fields sit idle because no one cared enough to help. See you on December 6th.
