November designated "Wife Assault Prevention Month' In Ontario, November has been designated as "Wife Assault prevention Month." There are many myths to explain why wife assault happens but facts are that one out of every seven women in Canada is battered by her partner. In the Durham Region, women are being threatened, punched, slapped, kicked, beaten, stabbed, and shot at by the men they live with. Violence is occurring in every kind of home and in every neighbourhood; to women of all ages, income levels and cultures. You may know a woman, touch- ed by abuse, or you youself may have known such violence. The Denise House is a safe place for abused women and their children in the Durham Region. The Denise House was named after a former resident, who was abused and eventually murdered in March 1988. Denise represents what should not have happened, and unfortunately, what poten- tially can happen when violence occurs within a relationship. Children exposed to family violence are themselves far more likely to become batterers or vic- tims. In our endeavours to stop the cycle of violence, The Denise House offers the following assistance: -- protection and safety -- accommodations for women and their children who have been abused or threatened -- a twenty-four hour crisis line -- meals, clothing and necessities for women residents -- supportive counselling for residents and non-residents -- information and referrals regarding legal, medical, finan- cial services -- public awareness and educa- tional presentations regarding the issues surrounding abuse The Denise House works to em- phasize that wife assault, like any form of assault, is a crime. No one should have to live in terror.
