-- The Port Perry ModJacks are back on track, and in a big way. The MoJacks spun back-to- back wins over the weekend, dumping the Little Britain Mer- chants 3-1 Saturday night, and they followed that with a con- vincing 5-1 victory on home ice over league leading Bowman- ville Eagles. The four-point weekend gave MoJacks 12 for the season and pushed them into a tie for fourth with the Cobourg Cou- gers. ModJacks were full marks for the 5-1 win over the Eagles as they led from start to finish and put together 60 minutes of solid fundamental hockey. It was their best showing on home ice so far in this young Junior C season. Brad Menzies got things going mid-way through the first on the power play with a quick shot from 15 feet out. John Har- man and Phil McBride set him up. Early in the second, the line of Menzies, Harman and Warren Geer put on a dazzling Playing their best hockey so far this season, the Port Perry MoJacks won back-to- back weekend games over Little Britain and first place Bowmanville Eagles. (see story for the details) That's Brad Menzies in action Sunday night in front of Eagle netminder lan Cooper. Nine games in 8 days for Goreski Insulators The Goreski Insulators have just completed a very busy week as they played 9 games in 8 days. The Insulators started off in Ux- bridge on Sunday, November 11. Port Perry won this game 6-1 due to some great forechecking and good defense. The Turtles, sponsored by Ken and Dianne Goreski, hosted a team from Lindsay on the follow- ing night and came out on top 9-0. Getting the shut-out was Rick Hutchinson. "Then the team travelled down to good ol' Cobourg to take on a very powerful team. Port was ahead, then trailed by 1, then tied it up, then trailed by 1, then scored 3 unanswered goals to defeat Cobourg 5-4. Port then participated in a large tournament in Cobourg. There were 28 teams in all participating. 1st Game Port's first match-up was against a team from Glouster. Port won this game 3-0 with the shut-out going to Rick Hutchin- son. Getting the M.V.P. award was Duane Empringham. Good work "D."" 2nd Game Port then played Kitchener and came out flying as they scored ten, count'em, 10 unanswered goals. Getting the shut-out was Steven Stiles and grabbing the M.V.P. was Jeff Card. 3rd Game Port played Brockville in their third game, and again, did not let the opposition score as they blew 'em out of the arena. The final score was 9-0. Getting the shut-out was Rick Hutchinson and grabb- ing M.V.P. was Pete King. 4th Game Port, now out of their pool, ad- vanced to the quarter finals against a solid team from Wex- ford. Port scored two goals but again allowed no goals. Getting the shut-out was Steven Stiles, who also picked up the M.V.P. award. Good work in there Steve. 5th Game Port played a rough team from Millbrook and just squeezed by them 3-2. This was the semi-finals and the victory took them to the championship. Getting the M.V.P. honors for this game was Gavin Cochrane. Championship Game As Port waited to see who they were to play in the finals, Oshawa and Ernestown battled it out as they went to sudden death where every minute, a player would be taken off. Well it got down to a one on one situation until Ernestown finally won. Port out-played Ernestown and came away victorious with a 4-0 win. Getting the fifth shut-out of the tourny was Steven Stiles and grabbing the M.V.P. was Corey Bricknell. It is to be highly recognized that Port had a record of 31 goals for and only two goals against. Awesome!! Scoring in the last week is Jeff Card - 11 goals, 8 assists. Corey Bricknell - 9 goals, 9 assists. Duane Empringham - 5 goals, 11 assists. Scott Wylie - 4 goals, 10 assists. Sean McEnaney - 4 goals, 9 assists. Dave Pashley - 2 goals, 10 assists. Pete King - 11 assists. Gavin Cochrane - 4 goals, 7 assists. Sean Ellis - 4 goals, 4 assists. Joe Broadworth - 4 goals, 3 assists. Dave Bourgeois - 2 Turn to Page 33 three-way passing play in front of the Eagle net as Geer put the icing on the cake with a wrist shot that beat Ian Cooper clean- ly. Eagles mounted their only threat of the game in the second when Greg Goode found the top corner at 1:36 to make the score 2-1. But the ModJacks weath- ered the pressure and turned things around at 16:43 on a nif- ty short-handed marker by John Lally. He took a long pass from Al Avery, broke into the clear and fired a puck that bounced off the goalie into the cage. It was su- perb effort by Lally and Avery, and that goal seemed to take any starch from the Eagle wings. Geer notched his second of the game early in the final frame after Todd Taylor won a face-off cleanly in the Eagle zone. And Avery capped a fine game for himself at 11:45 as he dashed in alone from the right side to make the final score 5-1. Drew Campbell handled the net-minding chores in solid fashion for the ModJacks kicking aside 31 shots. This was an entertaining hockey game with plenty of ac- tion at both ends of the rink, the usual heavy htting when Bow- manville and Port Perry hook up, and fine defensive work by the MoJack blue line crew. On Saturday evening against the Merchants, John Harman led the scoring with two goals and an assist for the 3-1 win in Little Britain.. Phil McBride clicked on a power play and Menzies had a hand in set- ting up two goals. The MoJacks were not so fortunate Nov. 13 in Ajax as they were dumped 8-6 by Axe- men. Goals were scored by Al Avery with two, Jarrett Har- man, John Harman, Warren 4 point week puts MoJacks back on track Geer and Brad Menzies with singletons. Jason Head had two assists. SLAPSHOTS: Strange things seem to take place at the Scugog Arena when the Eagles are in town. In the first meeting of the season three weeks ago, Eagles went up 8-1 and then had to hang on for a 9-8 win. The game Sunday night was delayed 45 minutes due to a hole in the ice beside one of the goal-posts. They even used a cannister of CO2 in an effort to get the ice in the hole to freeze. After suffering three straight losses, the MoJacks held a team meeting prior to last Thursday's practice ses- sion. We don't know what was said, but obviously it must have helped as the team went on to record the back-to-back week- end wins, and looked darn good in the process. The blue line ranks are thin for the ModJacks. Chris Arsenault is still on the shelf re- covering from a broken ankle, and won't be back until Christ- mas at least. And Rob Willetts had to leave Sunday's game with an ankle injury suffered against Ajax. Al Avery, Warren Geer and Dan Maw are getting duty along the blue line, which in turn means coach Ken Harman has had to juggle some of the forward lines. ModJacks home game this weekend has been moved from Sunday to Saturday night be- cause of the Grey Cup. Cougars are in town Satur- day night (Nov. 24) for an 8:00 PM faceoff. The MoJacks are idle until then. The Cobourg game should be a dandy as these teams are neck and neck in the standings, and the Cougars have solid goal-keeping. More teams needed for Sportsland Bonspiel by Scott Howey Teams are still needed for the Sportsland Bonspiel on Saturday, November 24. This is an open bonspiel with entries welcome to out-of-town teams as well as local rinks. On Sunday, November 25 club playdowns for the Blue Light Tankard are being held. Three teams, Ian Griffen, Ralph Fair- man, and Scott Howey will be vy- ing for two spots at the Zones which are being held in Port Perry, December 8, 9, & 10. The Blue Light Tankard is the premier event on the men's com- petitive curling calendar with the eventual winner representing On- tario at the Briar. An excellent field with a capacity crowd ex- pected at this year's event in Port Perry. Again last week there was no winner in the Pot of Gold draw, so the pot is building. The Labatts Oshawa Major League had a week off last week but action resumes Wednesday, November 21 at 9:00 at the Oshawa Curling Club. Spectators are welcome. The finals of the week long Bacardi Rum Cash Spiel were held on Sunday at the Brampton Curling Club. John Base of Mississauga defeated Russ Howard of Penetang to win the men's side while Marilyn Bodogh (Darte) of St. Catherines topped Oshawa's team of local resident Debbie Thompson to win the ladies. The Port Perry team of Scott Howey, Dave Roth, Greg Timbers and Glen James were eliminated by Howard in the semi-finals and picked up $1300 for their efforts. Best wishes to Bert Hutcheon who is temporarily laid-up. Get well soon.
