34 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 20, 1990 Petites motto is it's not over 'til it's over Port Perry 1.G.A. Petites travelled north to Stayner to de- fend their 87-88, and 89-90 Stayner Petite Title. The Port Perry 1.G.A. Petites being in a rebuilding year, after loosing such talent as Brandy Harris, Linda Payne, Melissa Pereman, Katie Senyk (goalie) and Jenny Storms etc., all lost to the Tweens on account of age. Coach Rose Skinner and Coaching Staff decided to test this newly formed teams skills against the tournaments elite teams. The first game was a real tug of war with the host team, Stayner. Stayner outshot Port Perry 17-13 and also out scored Port 6-4. Port was in this game right to the end but Lady Luck left town on the Port girls. Scoring for Port Perry 1.G.A Petites were Natasha Burgess unassisted, Amanda Wakeford from Natasha Burgess and Pam Hiltz. Laura Ranger scored her first goal "ever" assisted by Gini Taylor. Natasha Burgess scored her second goal assisted by Pam Hiltz and Jennifer Elliot. In goal for Port was Kristie Aldridge. Honorable Mention for Good Hus- tle goes to Natasha Burgess and Jenny Lane, and for Good Defen- sive Effort Jenny Pashley and Pam Hiltz. The second game was against the Oshawa Selects. Selects was written on their sweaters and that's exactly what they were "Selected."' This team was a Novice "A" team playing one league higher in Petite. This Novice "A" team is probably the best Novice team anyone will ever see again. Even their passes in warm up were enough to make a person dizzy. In "defence" of the Port I.G.A. Petites, even though they were out-classed, out- played and out-shot, Port didn't give up till the game was over. Port's Moto: 'It's Never Over Till It's Over' hold true for this gutsy never-say-die team. Oshawa out-shot Port Perry 40-10. Final score Oshawa Selects 9, A ringette weekend for Coldwell Banker Petites The weekend started with an exhibition game against our nemesis the Oshawa petite A's. Playing with only eight girls, everyone dug deep down for a tremendous effort in a seesaw struggle, that ended in a 4-4 tie. Shona Moase and Laura Hooker took advantage of great passing, giving Port the lead by each scor- ing twice. Oshawa replied with two goals in the final 4 minutes to tie it up. Bright and early Sunday the whole team arrived for a 6:30 a.m. practice. Mr. Senyk has not learned the wrist shot yet, so Jen- nifer Morden helped out at the practice giving tips on shooting and ""deking"' the goalie. This was helpful, as we travelled to Picker- ing for a league game. The girls were determined to keep their of- ficial record spotless! Cara Vander Slagt set up goals for both Laura Hooker and Janine Ham- mond. Brooke Shanley and Janna Senyk played strongly together with relentless checking and pass- ing. With only 2:55 remaining, Pickering netted the go-ahead Another Peal. P dence 7958 goal. Final score 4-3. Next stop - the same day - Oshawa. The Oshawa goalie thwarted many attempts but Dana Hooker set up Janine for two goals for a well deserved 2-all tie. This being our third time on ice, it was a good tune-up for our upcoming Nepean tournament. Alechia Cracknell and Bonni-Jo Norton are becoming a dynamic red stick duo, impressing us each game. The toughest position in ringette is the goaltender. We sometimes take for granted how well Katie Senyk plays. At blue stick, Cindy Verschuuren's checking and shooting are im- pressive. She has also showed her scoring touch with 2 goals and an assist against Barrie. Shona's sheer energy and determination are an inspiration to the team. The coach wishes to commend the girls for their dressing room manners and their on-ice sport- smanship. The parents are enjoy- ing some fine ringette. Their at- titude in the stands does help our girls play that much better. Next game: Port Perry vs. Ajax. Scoring for Port Perry was Jennifer Elliot from Amanda Wakeford. Honorable Mention for Good Hus- tle goes to Mandy Smart and for Good Defensive Effort, Lea-Anne Wakeford. In goal for Port Perry was Kristie Aldridge who faced 40 shots on net. The third game was against Richmond Hil! *2."" This fine disciplined team could really head-man the ring. Richmond Hills sweaters were double blue. Like the sweaters this team meant double trouble for Port Perry. Richmond Hill out-shot Port Perry 53-8 and outscored Port 9-1, but again Port never gave up, they kept plugging away. That's when Diane Vanderligt grabbed the ring and fired it up to Mandy Smart who unselfishly fed the ring ahead to (cousin) Michele Branton and sent her in on the goalie all alone on a shock- ed Richmond Hill goalie and scored without the goalie even moving on the shot. In goal for Port Perry was Amanda Wakeford facing 53 shots and making her first start in goal for Port Perry this year. Honourable Mention for Good Hustle goes to Mandy Smart, Diane Vanderligt and Michele Branton, for Good Defensive Ef- fort, Jenny Pashley gets the nod. Tweens win over Ajax As On Sunday afternoon the Ajax Tweens 'A' team travelled to Port Perry to challenge the Allen Siding Products Tweens in a regular league game. Ajax started out like a whirl- wind, scoring two goals within the first six minutes of the game. Our girls just couldn't seem to get their act together. Coach Dan Lal- ly then gave them all a good pep talk, as suddenly our team came to life, with Amy Parliament giv- ing us our first goal with an assist by Leea Kinnunen, making the score 3-1 for Ajax. Into the second period they went and it was like they'd caught their second wind. Again Amy netted a beauty, assisted by Vicki Stainton. One minute later Leea Kinnunen made her debut with assists by Amy and Linda Payne. After another goal by Ajax the score was now 3-3 and the pressure was on for the players and their fans. In the majority of the second period the Allen girls simply outplayed the opposition. Playing blue stick were Deanna Dempsey, Brandy Harris, Leea Kinnunen and Linda Payne. Two more goals were netted by Amy with both assists by Leea, Linda and Vicki Stainton. Ajax scored again with two minutes left in the game. The final score was Port Perry 5, Ajax 4. Amanda Webb and Amy Parlia- ment displayed excellent skating and shooting skills on white stick. Sarah Coyne did a splendid job in net with defence or red stick played by Kyla McCrae, Vicki Stainton, Heather Lally and Lisa Dodd. Good work, girls. That's two wins and two losses for the Allen Siding Products Tweens. Let's break the tie in our favour. Our first tournament in St. Catharines is approaching on Petites take show on the road again Port Perry 12 Omemee 3 On Wednesday, November 14, the Port 1.G.A. Petites travelled to Omemee for their first regular season league game against each other this season. It didn't take Port Perry long to light up the scoreboard. Just three minutes into the game Man- dy Smart slammed one in on a nice give and go pass from Aman- da Wakeford at 12:06 of the first period. At 11:28 Jenny Lane slipped one under the goalie on a good pass by Michele Branton. At 9:24 Jenny Lane again scored, catching the goalie going the wrong way, again being set up by Michele Branton. Natasha Burgess scored on a low shot assisted by Amanda Wakeford and Lea-Anne Wakeford. Port kept the pressure on Omemee by some nice fore- checking making them make costly mistakes and coughing up the ring in their own end of the rink. At 2:40, Michele Branton scored her 3rd goal of the year assisted by Jenny Lane. Laura Ranger stole the ring and fed it up to Man- dy Smart who blasted one into the Novice ringette The girls enjoyed Saturday November 17th very much as they travelled to Stayner for two games. One at 12:00 against Markham (a seasoned 3rd year Novice team) and at 6:00 against Oro (another experienced team). The Port Perry Novice girls are enjoying learning and improving with every practice and game and continue to make coach Steve Burgess proud with their high spirits and enthusiasm. Melissa Hooker scored 1 goal unassisted against Oro and a 2nd goal was scored by Jennifer open corner, At the end of the first period, Port was ahead by a count of 6-1. Port got things going quickly in the second period when Jennifer Elliot scored at 13:05 on a quick give and go from Amanda Wakeford. Natasha Burgess scored an unassisted goal on a "gutsy" move to steal the ring and fire it behind a stunned goalie. At 11:47 Jennifer Elliot scored on a nice set up by a much improved Gini Taylor. Natasha Burgess again scored unassisted to round out her '"'hat trick."" At 5:25 Gini Taylor feathered a pass over to Jennifer Elliot who wasted no time in tuck- ing the ring behind a tired Omemee goalie to earn her "hat trick." Gini Taylor grabbed the ring and with a quick flick of the wrist had a goal of her own. In goal for Port Perry was Kristie Aldridge once again playing a strong game between the pipes. Honorable Mention for Good Hustle goes to Laura Ranger and Michele Branton, and for Good Defensive Effort Jenny Pashley and Lea-Ann Wakeford. The three Stars of the game are 1. Mandy Smart, 2. Natasha Burgess and 3. Jennifer Elliot. Donnelly. During these games the girls had a switch with Sarah Verschuuren now on defense/red stick and Miranda Burgess on blue stick. These two changes seemed to benefit the team and the whole team looks forward to future competitions. Thanks to Steve and Wendy Burgess, the girls enjoyed a swim and a pizza in Collingwood bet- ween the games. Many thanks to' all parents and relatives who made the journey to Stayner to cheer on and support the team - the girls really appreciate it.
