Both teams were off to a lingering start. With 1 minute remaining in the first period, Port's Bill Zaparanuik meshed one from Tredway to give Port the 1-0 lead. But 5 minutes into the second, Sunderland managed a goal to tie it up. Port returned the favor when Jay Tredway found twine from Bill Zaparanuik and Jeremy Geer. . Sunderland scored at the end of the second and popped another just 30 seconds into the third to gain a 3-2 lead. But Port wasn't finished. Zap managed his second from a nice set up from Lefort and Tredway. 30 seconds later Lefort ripped a top-hand-corner goal with assists going to Zap and Tredway. Sunderland tied it up and Port couldn't manage another one, and the game ended in a 4-4 tie. Special mention to Bill Zaparanuik as he scored twice and picked up a pair of assists on the night. Way to steal the crowd Zap. TOURNAMENT The Legion competed in their first tounament of the year last weekend. They were in Gravenhurst. Their first game the boys squared off against a team from the town of Millbrook. Millbrook came out looking bet- ter than Port and had a 2 goal lead after the first stanza. Shrigley got the ball rolling with a stupendous shot into the top shelf where they keep the peanut butter. Port came back within the se- cond with McCready getting his first of the early season on a thunderous shot from the point off a feed from Chambers. Port scored once again before the second frame ended. Tredway pounced on a rebound and found twine. Assists went to McCready and Laird. Millbrook scored once in the third, tying the game at 3. Overtime lurked in the shadows beyond the horizon. Lefort came to the rescue with a vicious shot into the top corner. Earning assists were Laird and Tredway. Hammond roamed bet- ween the pipes and got the win. Jay Tredway played exceptional- Bantams win and tie Port Perry Sportsland Bantams recorded a tie at home and a win on the road in league action this week. Wednesday night, Port hosted Manvers and jumped into a quick 2-0 lead on goals by Steve Desautels from Chad Garvock and Mike Sluggett and Garvock from Jason Coutoulakis and Slug- gett. Manvers popped a pair within 8 seconds late in the first period to tie the game. Port then scored a quick pair of their own early in the second. Garvock won the draw deep in the Manvers end and Sluggett tipped it over to Scott Heasman, whose point blast beat the goaltender. Just over a minute later another Heasman shot was deflected by Lou Whit- field. Desi also assisted. Just before the period ended, Desautels made it 5-2 with a hard shot from the slot, set up by Gar- vock and Sluggett. Manvers then came to life, scoring three goals in 2:08 to tie the game with 42 seconds left. Penalties cost Port dearly, as all three goals were power play ef- forts, one a five-on-three. Larry Houston and Paul Lynch led Manvers with a goal and 2 assists each. Saturday, Port travelled to Bowmanville and played a strong team game in a 5-0 victory. Gar- vock continued his offensive out- put, scoring 2 goals, giving him 10 points in the last three league games. Both goals were scored from close-in after excellent passes from Desautels. Sluggett also assisted on one, Coutoulakis on the other. Todd Smart fired a goal, pick- ing up a loose puck after Chad Kearns forced a turnover on a pass from Jason Phillips. Jeremy Norton notched the fourth goal unassisted, intercepting a clear- ing attempt at the point and blasting it into the top corner. Whitfield completed the scoring when he took a centering pass from Mike Williams and slipped a long shot under the goalie. Brent Harper started the play. This game featured some fine passing combinations and an ef- fective defensive performance in front of James Patterson who was sharp when necessary. At the end of the second period, it was a 2-1 Gravenhurst lead. In the third period, Port was all over Gravenhurst but they couldn't buy one. the score ended up still 2-1 in favour of Gravenhurst. The player of the game award went to Zap as he had a prime game. Way to go Bill. Port's future games are unknown. PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 20, 1990 -- 37 Malmont Atom As beat Nobleton 3-2 The Malmont Atom A's hosted Cobourg Friday night in an end to end battle. Port's forwards Adam J., Seth G. and Dillon W. all had great shots in the first period but couldn't get on the board. One minute into the 2nd period, on a rebound, Cobourg took the lead. It wasn't long though, before Daryl McEnaney swung around the net and set up Kent Johnston out in front. Kent took a great shot that was tipped in by Casey Van Schagen who was on the doorstep. This exciting game wasn't determined until late in the 3rd when Cobourg scored 2 unanswered goals. These guys travelled to Gravenhurst Saturday morning and met Nobleton in tournament action. Nobleton hit the scoreboard 1st, half-way through the first period. The second period belonged to Malmont as they meshed the puck 3 times. Adam Jones set up Dillan with a beautiful pass. Dillan's hard shot found the open net past the goalie. Dillan came back within a minute to score his se- cond when he controlled the puck around the net and tucked it in nicely. Assist again, going to Adam. Great teamwork guys! Before scoring the third goal in the 2r.d, Port played 2 men short handed. Great penalty killing skills were demonstrated by Daryl, Justin Kowalczyk. Paul made 4 fine saves too. With 11 seconds left, Kent Johnston came towards the goalie who nicely passed the puck to him. Kent didn't skip a beat as he picked it up and fired it in. Nobleton scored once more in the 3rd to end a great game 3-2 for Port. Paul Shrigley received the "play of the game" trophy after a fine performance for Port bet- ween the pipes. Back in Gravenhurst Sunday morning Port met a hard working team from Ennismore. Despite all their efforts, Port couldn't buy a goal. Mike Heasman played an outstanding game on defense for Port and was awarded the "play of the game" trophy for Port. En- nismore came out on top 3-0, sen- ding Port home. Great hockey guys.
