Kim Mitchell, activity direc- tor at the nursing home, told the Port Perry Star that the APO is a collection of activity people across the province who work with older people. Mrs. Mitchell has worked with Mrs. Goss for 15 years at the nursing home and nominat- ed her for the award. Mrs. Goss was chosen as the administrator of the year and received the award at the annu- al APO conference held in late October. Fifteen years ago Mrs. Goss hired Kim Mitchell and started an activity program at the Port Perry Nursing Home. "Her support and encourage- ment of the activities program over the years is what earned her the award," Mrs. Mitchell said. She said Mrs. Goss has done some very innovative things in the nursing home. She imple- ments a unique staffing system that allows all staff to rotate their responsibilities. "This works out great for the activities program because it taps into all the different tal- ents of the staff," Mrs. Mitchell said. Mrs. Goss is very open mind- ed and believes anything is pos- sible if given a chance, Mrs. Mitchell said. Some of the activities at the nursing home include a Christ- mas bazaar where the resi- dents make all the items that are for sale, an exercise pro- gram, get-together dances with other nursing homes, student visits, and day and overnight excursions. Mrs. Mitchell said they are trying to save enough money for a week-long trip to Florida, Another program, called room service, takes the activi- ties to a resident's room. The program is for residents who aren't feeling up to par or don't want to mix with other people. As for the award, Mrs. Goss gives all the credit back to the fine ladys' wear HWY. 12 - BROOKLIH presents 655-5474 VICTORIAN CHRISTHAS OPEN HOUSE Take a step into the past ... enjoy Christmas Shopping in the ambiance of a time gone by. "If this is a good nursing home, and we know that it is, then what exactly is it that makes the residents come out of their shell," Mrs. Goss said. She explained that when new residents are brought to the home it is not uncommon for them to go through a reactive depression because of a loss in health or their spouse. "They need to be drawn out of their shell," she said and that's what the staff at the Port Perry Nursing Home does. "Most places may deal with the physical diagnosis," she said, adding, while that is im- portant, mental wellness is just as necessary. Throughout the interview Mrs. Goss continued to shower the glory onto her staff and the residents, but near the end she finally gave herself some well- deserved credit. "I do have the ability to hire great staff," she said. - Mrs. Goss has been the ad- ministrator at the nursing home since 1974. She has hired all but two present staff mem- bers. "The residents tell the staff what they want and the staff tells me. I strictly facilitate what they want and that (sys- tem) works. It really works."
