/ 28 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 27, 1990 - Julie Slute, winner of Recycling Week Essay contest by Julie Slute It's the nineties and our en- vironment is not in very good shape. Too many people are litter- ing. I even know some people who throw garbage out in fields or in lakes. I, myself even throw stuff out the window, but the stuff I throw I throw in fields and can be composted and will rot or disintegrate. When I was younger, around the age of five, I would throw a pop bottle in a field. But as I said this is the nineties, and ont.v. and in magazines they are always en- couraging us kids and adults to recycle. For instance, on the television show called **My Two Dads,' they try to make you swat flies instead of spraying them with bug spray that isn't ozone friendly. And on a cartoon show called "The Smoggies' some characters called Smoggies, pollute the En- vironment and more characters called Suntots always fix up whatever harm the Smoggies have done. I know because I'm only a child at the age of ten. There are many more shows I could tell you about, but instead I'd rather talk to you about Wen- dy Bateman. Unless you saw it, you would not believe what she has done with garbage and plastic bags. Mrs. Bateman has made a sweat tent with plastic bags, and she had us crawl in it and if we had stayed in longer than we did _ we would have suffocated. And now I know how the earth feels when we litter it with plastic and other garbage that won't let it breath and live. She has also made nice colourful carry sacs. | didn't know garbage was so useful. There was also a curtain of gar- bage. All of the stuff she used for it was garbage she and her children had collected off of her road. I hope after you have read all of this, you will not litter and will recycle. Please help the earth to survive so we can all live happily ever after. Editor's Note: This essay was judged the winner in the Recycl- ing Week Essay Contest. Cartwright Scouting News by Nancy Anger Well another busy year has started with the boys being in- volved in quite a few projects already. At the end of September, the boys were out collecting bottles from the very generous people of Blackstock, Nestleton, Caesarea and surrounding areas. Apple day fell in mid October and again people gave generous- ly to the boys. On October 27th the Scouts participated in a District Bike Hike, starting at Port Perry and ending near Lindsay where they camped overnight and because of bad weather had to be picked up instead of biking back. Allin all I was told it was a great camp and the boys had a good time. October 29 and 30 saw Hallo- ween parties taking place at Blackstock Town Hall. A great time was had by all. In the last few weeks the Caesarea Fire Department gave a talk to the Cubs regarding fire safety and Jack Lee (the 1st Pineridge Commissioner) gavea talk to the cubs on Remembrance Day. Dale Muirhead is the new Group Committee Chairperson replacing Ruth Collins' who has done a super job over the past couple of years. Thanks Ruth! Starting shortly, will be our an- nual cheese drive with the boys coming around to see who would like to place orders. Unfortunate- ly last year, some of the orders were misplaced and we will do our utmost to see that there will be no mix-ups this year. This scouting group could not function without the generous support of people in Blackstocl and surrounding areas. Thank you! VON seeks volunteers Come and join our team!
