gent -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 27, 1990 The first Bonspiel of the season was held Saturday at the Port Perry Curling Club and a rink from the Boulevard Club in Toronto went home with the Sportsiand trophy. Bonspiel chairman Gary McConnell presents trophy to skip Bob Garvin and his team of Bruce Scott, Dave Rintoul and Gary Miller. They finished the three games with 46.5 points, and that was enough to edge out Scott Howey's foursome which finished second with 44 points. Bobby Baun tournament, Jan. 18 Lakers fair well in Woodville Scugog Lakers participated in the tongh "A" division this past weekend and considering the competition, faired well. Friday night they played a strong two-way game to start the tournament off, and beat the Pickering Pot Bellies 6-1. Mike Driscoll and Samis each had 2 assists, with Bob McEachern, Fox, Beveridge, Jackson, and Al Bonner drawing singles. Don Card played a strong game in goal. On Saturday, they played a tough team from Lindsay. They played Lindsay even up for most of the first period, but with the score 1-1 with under 2 minutes left, Lindsay scored 3 quick goals and went on to beat the Lakers 9-2. Bob Beveridge and Grant Jackson scored for the Lakers. Ken Smart and Rick Campbell had assists. This put the Lakers into a must win situation on Sunday and play- ing without a full team they bow- to a powerful Beaverton team 7-0. The boys played hard for the first period, but just ran out of gas. Next tournament for the Lakers is January 18, in the Bobby Baun Tournament, played in Pickering. For information call ... 985-400 Lions, Lake Scugog Lumber victorious Lions 9 Whitby Auto Wreckers 3 The first game of the day saw the Lions hosting the Whitby Auto Wreckers. The first five minutes of the game was a see-saw affair with both teams having some good chances to score. At 5:31, Jeremy Gibson lit up the scoreboard on a nice pass from Tyler Wootton. At 4:45 Jeremy Gibson scored again on an unassisted goal to make it 2-0 for the Lions. At 4:32 Whitby got a goal of their own on a tic-tac-toe play from Tommy Baker, Jay Fletcher and over to John Chambers to score. Jeremy Gib- son completed his "hat trick' on a neat goal assisted by Steven Martyn and Shane Savage. At 1:39 Shane Savage scored assisted by Tyler Wootton and Jeremy Gibson. The first period ended with the Lions ahead 4-1. Whitby opened the second period at 9:09 when Ben Steven- son scored from David Crouter and Jay Fletcher. At 8:58 the Lions took control again when Tyler Wootton scored from Jeremy Gibson. At 8:43, Jeremy Gibson scored again from Tyler Wootton to make the score 6-2 for the Lions. Whitby Auto Wreckers scored with 19 seconds left in the second period on a goal by Jay Fletcher from Tyler Wootton to end the second period 6-3 for the Lions. The Lions opened the third period with a goal at 9:03 by Jeremy Gibson unassisted. At 7:33, Jeremy Gibson got his '"'Dou- ble Hat Trick' (six goals) assisted by Shane Savage. At 1:44 left in the game, Shane Savage scored assisted by Jeremy Gibson and Tyler Wootton. Jeremy Gib- son ended the game scoring 6 goals and 3 assists. Playing in goal for the Lions was Brad Monsma and Ryan Puckrin was in goal for Whitby Auto Wreckers. Lake Scugog Lumber 3 Gord Lewis Motors 2 The second game of the day saw Lake Scugog Lumber take on the mighty Gord Lewis Motors team. For the first four minutes of the game both teams had some good chances but only to get robb- ed by both the goalies. Scugog Lumber opened the score at 5:39 when Travis Picard scored, assisted by Aaron Levy. Lake Scugog Lumber scored again to take a two goal advantage on a goal by David Gainey unassisted. The second period was scoreless but both Jonathon Froats and Corey Branton, the two goalies stole the show. Try as they may the offences couldn't beat either goalie. At 7:55 of the third period, Lake Scugog Lumber took a three goal lead on an unassisted goal by Kevin Edwards. At 4:39 Lewis Motors scored to close the gap to 186 CASIMIR STREET, PORT PERRY 3-1 on a goal by Scott Hefferin assisted by Jeff Gunn. Scugog Lumber had three breakaways- only for Corey Branton to pick their pockets and keep the puck out of the net. Scugog Lumber kept the pressure on in the Gord Lewis game, but with 18 seconds left Lewis Motors scored on a nice give and go goal by Jeff Gunn from in front of the net assisted by Daniel Lee. ' In goal for Lake Scugog Lumber was Jonathon Froats. In goal for Gord Lewis Motors was Corey Branton. An Honorable Mention for Good Hustle goes to Jeff Gunn for Lewis Motors and Aaron Levy for Lake Scugog Lumber. Atom A's win, lose The Malmont Atoms A met Ux- bridge Friday night and took an early lead. Daryl McE. dug the puck out of the corner and fed Kent J.. Kent then took a shot and Seth Gray tipped it in. Uxbridge tied it up half-way through the 2nd period. With 1:44 left in the 2nd a hard working Daryl McEnaney meshed one in the far corner on a breakaway. Uxbridge tied it up with 42 seconds left in the second period. Uxbridge went ahead for the first time in the third period and 4 minutes later put the insurance marker in. Saturday afternoon, Malmont travelled to Lindsay and put in a great performance, coming home with a victorious 4-1 win! Way to play Port! Casey V. put Port on the board with a blistering wrist shot upstairs past the glove of Lind- say's netminder. Assist to Mike Morden. Port's second goal was scored by Daryl McE.. Assisting on the play with some fancy pass- ing at the blueline were Rob Mur- phy and Mike Heasman. Lindsay's only goal of the game came half-way through the se- cond period. Less than 3 minutes later Danny Robinson's great ef- fort to keep the puck in the Lind- say end resulted in Daryl McEnaney's second goal. Daryl wasted no time driving the puck home. Ports 4th goal was scored after Shane Norton took a low hard shot. Casey Van Schagen picked up the rebound and bulg- ed the twine! Luke Carnaghan played a steady game in net for Port. Novice houseleague Port Perry Printing won their first game of the season with a 3-2. win over David's Hairstyling. The Port Perry Printing squad had to come from behind after giving up two quick goals in the first period by Joel Phoenix who was assisted by Jason Gunn and Wade Ritchie unassisted. Billy Carr started the com- eback with an unassisted goal in the second period. In the third, Chris Monsma assisted by Scott Cunningham tied the game and a powerplay goal by Justin Heyworth won the game with 18 seconds left. Billy Carr got the assist on the winning goal. Greg Lansdale had a fine game in goal, holding the other team scoreless in the last two periods.
