The taxi ser- vice is a safe way to get rid of household hazardous wastes such as paint, cleaners, and batteries. Toxic Taxi to pick up HHW A new taxi is cruising the streets of Scugog, but it's pick- ing up a different kind of fare. During the months of Decem- ber and January, Durham Re- gion's toxic taxi will be in this municipality picking up house- hold hazardous wastes (HHW). It made its premiere appear- ance in Scugog Thursday at PPHS where regional officials spoke to Grade 12 students about HHW and the service. HHWSs include household cleaners, paints, varnishes, stains, pool chemicals, batter- ies, used motor oil, antifreeze, transmission and brake fluids, etc. With the implementation of the taxi service, Scugog resi- T.G. To prepare for the toxic taxi, regional officials advise resi- dents to first identify all HHWs in their home, and then decide Y\ather the product is still use- ul. Before calling the toxic taxi, the region suggests that resi- dents should ask neighbors if they could use the substance (eg. leftover paint). If no use can be found for the product, the region will pick it up. Residents of Port Perry, Prince Albert and Blackstock can get toxic taxi pick up by calling the Scugog Municipal Office at 985-7393. Pick up days are Wednesday nights and Saturdays in December and January. During the two-month trial period, the toxic taxi will not be travelling to other hamlets and villages in Scugog. Those resi- dents may take advantage of the service by dropping off their HHWSs at "a friend's home" in Port Perry, Prince Albert or Blackstock, regional official Glen Pleasants told the Port Perry Star. The toxic taxi is just one way to reduce the amount of HHWs being dumped in landfills. A re- gional pamphlet suggests resi- dents use environmentally friendly alternatives when available. This includes using . homemade household cleaners made from baking soda or vine- gar. Also, consumers can per- suade manufacturers to change their products so they are more environmentally sound. Phos- phate-free laundry detergent and vinegar-based window cleaners are two examples of a consumer's power of persua- sion. The taxi, which is actually a modified cube van, is presently on display at the Scugog Munic- ipal Office. at the MURRAY HOUSE 279 Queen St. JEWELLERY BY KIvV PRICE Saturday December 8 th Oam-4pm a rR A a aaa ry a
