by Ken Gadsden Last week we talked about the importance of bringing i your brain along with your body when driving. In other words concentrating on what you are doing. We looked at the Cana- da Safety Council {C.S.C.} definition of defensive driving; ""Driving to prevent collisions in spite of the actions of others and the conditions around you." We then referred to their "pre trip mental inventory" and six conditions which is most important?" six critical components of the driving recipe: 1. Light whichever conditions arise. Tools for bright sunshine or snow- glare would be sunglasses and the use of the sun visor. Don't look directly into oncoming headlights. Look well ahead to the right, using road edge markings as a guide. tn time make you more "seeable." _ Be prepared to reduce your speed and increase your fol- owing distance whenever light conditions deteriorate. Always keep a sharp eye out for pedestrians, cyclists and roadside activity. Don't overdrive your headlights {i.e. never drive faster than you can safely stop after seeing an object in your head- Ni shifting from high to low beam is another assist in keeping your concentration focussed on your driving. Keep all your lights clean, working and properly aimed. - 2. Weather improve. Don't be a "peephole driver" make sure all windows are : clean and clear before starting out. Keep yourself visible to others by removing buildups of snow, ice, or mud from head and tail lights. Slow down, maintain a safe following distance and be alert: Roads are slipperiest at the start of a rainfall or during a light misty rain. In those conditions surface oil and grease form a slick film on the roadway. - Too much speed and too little tire tread or pressure may ead to hydroplaning. Steering and braking are then affected +: because the tire isn't in contact with the road - it's actually rid- = ing on a thin layer of water. At temperatures near freezing you may encounter water on 3 RN BN = 2 x N aN nS RN 3 Rae 7. 2 he roadway but ice on bridges, shaded areas or windward : ide of hills. Watch out for the effects of high winds on your own and oth- ; er vehicles. 3. Traffic Traffic could be bumper to bumper tie ups or that solitary vehicle which shoots out of a sideroad into your path. Others too, share the road, bicyclists, motorcyclists, and pedestrians. Like you, they are entitled to their rights but sometimes they 2 get careless, so be prepared! - Always yield to pedestrians - Treat motorcycles as full sized vehicles - Go with the flow. Travel at the same pace as other traffic. If . most other vehicles are speeding stay to the right. - Avoid congested routes wherever possible - Be courteous. When it's necessa others even if they should rightly yield to you. 4. Vehicle You have to be able to see, be seen, stop, go, and steer § safely and efficiently. Your vehicle is equipped to do so. Your § job is to keep the various components well maintained and to § know the status of each one at all times. This means a quick § checkover before starting out. As well: - The horn - a tool for alerting other drivers of your presence and establishing eye to eye contact - not for venting your dis- § pleasure with their actions! # - Mirrors - adjust before starting out use them all and remem- i ber there are blindspots. - Exhaust system - Don't let it put you to sleep. - Occupant restraints - lifesavers! But only when they're used. - An unfamiliar vehicle - make sure you know where all the 2 controls are and how they operate before you hit the road. Wow! My space is rapidly disappearing. Looks as if we'll § J the remaining two conditions till next week. | & romise next week we'll answer the question about the most § important condition. In the meantime why not make a differ- § have to hol ence? Drive defensively! WINTER DRIVING M.O.T.C. have produced a neat little pamphlet on winter driving. Sympathy Extended Sympathy goes out to Gloria Parsons of Caesarea, in the sud- den death of her mother, Mrs. Langley of Toronto. She was preparing to take a trip to Califor- nia; when she passed away. She leaves to mourn besides daughter Gloria, another daughter Susan of Toronto. We deeply sympathize with Lorne McKee of Nestleton, in the loss of his beloved wife Irene who passed away during the week after a lengthy sojourn in Port Perry Hospital. She leaves to mourn her husband Lorne, and many close relatives. Irene oc- cupied herself making her home a pleasant place to live. A warm and loving person with a heart of gold. Much loved and respected by all who knew her. She will be sadly missed. Sorry to learn of the passing of a long time resident of Janetville Village, Mrs. Verean Sanderson. She was well known because of her great collection of buttons, from many parts of the world. She will be missed by family and many friends. .
