Open air rink gets council approval A suggestion by a group of Port Perry business people to build and maintain an open air skating rink on Lake Scugog was greeted warmly by mem- bers of Township council Mon- day afternoon. But for technical reasons, council will ask that the loca- tion of the proposed open air rink be moved to the south side of the government pier at the foot of Queen Street. In unveiling the unique plans for council, businessman Lang Cope said the group origi- nally had hoped to construct the rink just off from the tennis courts, so that skaters would be able to use the large picnic shel- ter and parking lot near the ball diamonds. However, the picnic shel- ter, which was moved this fall to make way for new parking, is not ready for use yet, and nei- ther is the freshly paved park- ingarea. In fact, council wants that new parking area closed all win- ter to protect the new asphalt. Mr. Cope said moving the location of the proposed rink would not be a problem for the group of business people. What they want to do is provide an attraction that will be of benefit to local residents and help to attract visitors to the community in the winter months. "We are motivated by ec- nomics," he told council. "We hope (by drawing visitors) to help stimulate business over the next three months," he said. He said the business group, which has no connections to the Chamber of Commerce, hopes to raise money by selling coffee, hot chocolate and snacks, and perhaps by charging a fee to use the open air rink. The money would be used to keep the ice groomed and plowed, he said. Members of council reacted favourably to the concept, but Meeting is last chance fo keep Scugog soccer organization alive The Scugog Youth Soccer organzation is in danger of fold- ing unless there is substantial interest shown at a meeting to be held December 10.
