30 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, December 11, 1990 MolJacks defeat Merchants in spirited bout It wasn't easy by any means, but the Port Perry Mo- Jacks got the job done Sunday night at the Scugog Arena as they defeated the Little Britain Merchants 6-5. This was one tough, bruis- ing hockey game as both teams displayed a nasty dis-like for eachother. It was the kind of game where players kept their heads up at all times, and the heavy hitting took its toll. There were several skir- mishes and one feature bout in the first period that seemed to set the tone for the entire match. But the important thing, as far as the MoJacks are con- cerned, is the two points. And, as the saying goes, they earned those points, the old-fashioned way. After spotting the Mer- chants a goal in the first minute of play by Taylor Cant, the Mo- Jacks tied things up at the mid- point when John Harman un- loaded with a wrist shot that seemed to catch the goalie by surprise. Trevor McIntyre and Rob Metcalfe drew the assists. And it was Metcalfe who put the ModJacks up for good at the 4:00 minute mark of the sec- ond as he cashed in a rebound on the power play. Three minutes later, de- fenseman Bill Lawrenson found the range with a screened shot through a big crowd in front of the Merchant net. It looked like ModJdacks were starting to get some mo- mentum at this point, but the Merchants Jeff Chandler con- verted a two-on-one break at 9:02 to make it 3-2. Prettiest goal of the game came at 19:07 with the Geer, Menzies, Harman line throwing the puck around with a series of clever passes deep in the Mer- chant zone. Geer eventually worked his way clear and flipped home a back-hand to give MoJacks a two-goal bulge. And they needed it as the teams traded goals in a wild third period. Steve Black counted twice for the visitors, with a single from Greg Corneil. Menzies replied for the Mo- Jacks and the game winner came from defenseman Bob Willetts who drifted in from the point to one-time a perfect pass from Menzies. Bantams take top honors On Wed. Dec. 5, the Goreski In- sulators hosted a rugged team from Uxbridge. Port led the first period two to nothing as Dave Pashley scored from Simon Traynor and Duane Empringham at the 2:33 mark. Then Sean Ellis scored from Joey Broadworth and Lindsay Parry. Uxbridge came back in the se- cond with two goals at the 13:11 and the 6:43. Port scored at the 1:58 mark with Duane Empr- It wasn't quite World War 3 on ice Sunday night at the Scugog Arena, but the MoJacks and visiting Little Britain Merchants went at it hammer and tong in a spirited Junior C Both Menzies and Harman has big games with five points each (one goal, four assists), and Metcalfe had two assists to go with his goal. Drew Campbell faced 30 shots in the MoJack net, and Ja- son Taylor had 41 chunks of rubber thrown his way at the other end of the rink. Not only was this a hard- hitting match, but it was chippy and downright dirty in places. And the result was a steady stream of players heading for the sin bin. MoJacks clicked on three power plays while their penalty killers shut down the Mer- chants completely. Though they did not figure in the scoring parade, players like Todd Taylor, Greg French, ingham scoring on a pass from Jeff Card. The score at the second intermission was Port 3 - Ux- bridge 2. The visitors scored first to tie it up in the third but Port scored a minute later with Ellis from Card and Pashley. The final score was Port 4 - Uxbridge 3. On Saturday Dec. 8, Port hosted their Annual Tournament and played the eight o'clock game against the Oshawa Bruins. Jason Head and Kevin Desrosi- ers worked hard all game. Early in the first period, Merchants Taylor Cant and Mo- Jacks Phil McBride squared off in a pretty decent fist fight. After removing each oth- er's head-gear, they flailed away until McBride lowered the boom with a right hand that caught Cant flush in the face, and that was the end of it. McBride got tagged with the instigator, going after Cant who had high-sticked one of the ModJacks. He'll miss the next game when the "war" resumes Satur- day night in Little Britain. SLAP SHOTS: The win gave the MoJacks 18 points, just one back of the Merchants who had been on a tear of late. Saturday Port Perry scored the first nine goals and kept them out of the net until the 6:05 mark of the third. Port then scored the next two as Port won 11 to 1. Scorers in this game were Duane Empringham, and Corey Bricknell three; Sean Ellis two; Jeff Card, Sean McEnaney and Pete King singles. Helpers on the goals were Geravin Sytnyk five; Dave Pashley three; Jeff Card two; Joey Broadworth, Lindsay game. When the dust finally settled over this hard-hitting af- fair, the MoJacks were on top by a 6-5 score, and the two points won't come much tougher than that.
