Liberals ~----m9M904------------ Nixon blasts NDP on economy Instead of getting on track to deal with the recession, the new NDP government has stalled at the starting line, interim Liberal Leader Robert Nixon said Dec. 20. "The recession is going to hit hard this winter, and the NDP has done little to help the 11,000 workers who have lost their jobs since the NDP was elected. Nor has the government done anything to protect workers who will lose their jobs this winter," Mr. Nixon said during a news con- ference to mark the end of the first NDP legislative sitting. "The NDP has failed to take ac- tion to aid farmers, small business, and first-time home buyers, or to implement in- itiatives that will encourage in- vestors to create jobs and speed economic recovery,' he said. Based on the NDP's com- mitments in Opposition, especial- ly promises made in the Agenda for People during the campaign, people were entitled to expect a lot more from this government, Nixon added. "The NDP's performance has been disappointing," the Opposi- tion leader said. 'And there's no indication that the government has established a clear sense of priorities to get rolling in the right direction." The NDP has also contributed to public cynicism towards government by breaking a wide range of commitments and rever- sing several long-time policies, Mr. Nixon noted. Among the commitments: * no action to protect laid-off workers who have lost wages or severance pay. * no action to meet commitments to increase the northern develop- ment fund. * no action to increase the number of subsidized child care spaces. * no extension of Go-Transit train service to Peterborough and Brantford despite a written com- mitment by Premier Bob Rae. Among the policy reversals: * the NDP will allow garbage from the Greater Toronto Area to be dumped outside the GTA after vowing to dispose of it within the GTA. * Environment Minister Ruth Grier says she will expand ex- isting garbage dumps without an Environmental Assessment after stating that no dumps should be used without a full EA. * the NDP has allowed Varity Corporation to transfer its head- quarters to Buffalo after making a commitment to stop the move. * Bob Rae has allowed foreign takeover of Consumers Gas after vowing to buy the company. * the government has provided funding to food banks after mak- ing a commitment to take steps to eliminate the need for food banks. "Many people are probably happy that the NDP hasn't kept some of its promises," Mr. Nixon said. "The problem is that we don't know which policies the government is going to keep, and which it is going to discard." The Liberals will keep up the pressure on the NDP in the New Year to take an activist role to alleviate the impact of the reces- sion and to encourage economic recovery, Mr. Nixon said. broken ank You for yodr THE DOWNTOWN PORT PERRY BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT AREA (BIA) MEMBERS WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE PEOPLE IN THE TOWNSHIP FOR THEIR SUPPORT OF OUR ORGANIZATION in 1990. : R Season's Greetings & Best Wishes for 1991 Working To Make Our Downtown Even Better re ------ B.I.
