Three straight 'wins boost club MoJacks move to within four points of first place in league The Port Perry ModJacks got a jump-start on their New Years celebrations. Playing their best hockey of the season last week, the Mo- Jacks rolled to three straight victories and moved to within four points of first place in the Central Junior C Hockey League. They started last Thursday night with a crushing 9-1 win over Lakefield Chiefs; followed that with a 5-4 victory Saturday in Cobourg and ushered out the old year Sunday night at, the Scugog Arena with a 7-1 drub- bing of the faltering Bowman- ville Eagles. The game Saturday after- noon in Cobourg was a rough and tumble see-saw affair that wasn't decided until late in the third period. Defenseman Rob Metcalfe got the game winner with an as- sist from Todd Taylor. Metcalfe had opened the scoring in this game, staking the team to a 1-0Olead in the first period. John Harman, Warren Geer and Todd Taylor counted markers in the middle period as MoJacks led 4-3 after 40 min- utes. But the Cougars tied the game on a power play before Metcalfe got the game winner. Drew Campbell got the nod in the MoJack net and turned aside 29 shots. At the other end of the ice, Dwayne Crawford faced 31 Mo- Jack shots and he had to be sharp to keep the game close. On Sunday eveningin front of abig crowd at the Scugog Are- na, the MoJacks turned in an outstanding two-way game to hammer the Bowmanville Ea- gles 7-1. It was the third straight de- feat for the Eagles as they fell 6- 2 to Cobourg last week and 10-2 Saturday night at the hands of the Little Britain Merchants. The game was probably de- cided in the opening three min- utes. Warren Geer netted a short-handed marker at the 44 second mark, off a breakaway pass from Metcalfe. He made no mistake with a wrist shot that beat Ian Cooper cleanly. A couple of minutes later as the Eagles were playing a man short, Gareth Stone raced in alone on Drew Campbell, but the MoJacks netminder came up with a big save. And from that point on the ModJacks were pretty much in control of this hockey game. Bill Lawrenson clicked on a power play at 10:22 to give the MoJacks a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes. They opened a 4-0 lead in 'the second on goals by Trevor McIntyre and Jarrett Harman, before the Eagles finally got on the board at 17:28 when Drew Allenby scored to make it 4-1. ModJacks had a bit of let- down towards the end of the sec- ond period, but they weathered the storm, thanks to some fine goaltending and outstanding penalty killing. © Foward Al Avery really Fels NA AS VW AEN hel th bo Fd Ya "ot ra)" pm ry sr Fad PTV . Port Perry MoJacks net- minder Drew Campbell (30) found himself at the bottom of this pile-up (looks more like a rugby scrum) during Junior C action at the Scugog Arena Sunday night. But Campbell and salted the match at 12:01 of the final frame when he stripped the puck from an Eagle defense- man, moved in alone and tucked a back-hand shot into the stop corner. That one made it 5-1 and the MoJacks breezed through the final few minutes as Kevin Desrosiers and John Harman rounded out the scoring. Although the Eagles didn't play with much gusto, the Mo- Jacks were full marks for their victory. Kevin Desrosiers turned in another solid game. He skated miles, killed penalties and "made things happen" with his strong checking. And his efforts were rewarded with a goal late in the game. Last Thursday night at the Scugog Arena the MoJacks had an easy time of it as they breezed to a 9-1 win over the Lakefield Chiefs. It was their third straight win over Lakefield in less than two weeks. MoJacks were in high gear for most of this game, while the Chiefs were sluggish and dis- organized. Warren Geer and Brad Menzies led the scoring attack with four points each. Geer had two goals and two assists while Menzies helped set up four goals. John Harman netted a pair . vil fd and singles came from Jim Ver- non, Kevin Desrosiers, John Lally, Al Avery and Dan Maw. ModJacks wasted little time getting things going as Vernon opened the scoring at 4:56 of the first when he took passes from Jarrett Harman and Lally and one-timed a perfect shot to the corner of the Chief net. The Chiefs only goal of the game came at 8:50 as the Mo- Jacks were playing two men short. Bill Wasson got his stick on Juveniles take The Key-Bar Office Equipment Juveniles won their second tour- nament in three tries in Uxbridge on Boxing Day, with three solid efforts throughout the day. The first game was at 9:00 a.m. against Uxbridge, which always proves to be an exciting matchup whenever these two teams square off against each other. Port took advantage of power play situa- tions in this low penalty played game, winning 4-3. Port took 2 minutes during the whole game and Uxbridge 12 minutes. In the second game against Aurora, Port won by an identical score of 4-3 in a rough hard hitting contest. By defeating Aurora, it put Port in the championship - game against Ennismore, which everyone thought would be Arg SAIN TP TY WW PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, January 2, 1991 -- 19 the MoJacks had no trouble knocking off Bowmanville Ea- gles 7-1. The win made it four straight for the surging Mo- Jacks and the third loss in a row for the sagging Eagles. (see story for all the details of a fine week in hockey for the MoJacks) a point shot that deflected by Dwayne Mackie in the MoJack cage. The MoJacks were still a man short at 10:17 when De- srosiers scored a beauty to put the team up for good. He blocked a Chief shot at his own line, then used his speed i break in alone and beat the Lakefield netminder with a back-hand shot. That was perhaps the turn- ing point in the match, as from fop honors in another rough, penalty filled game, because earlier in the day Ennismore had defeated Ux- bridge in one of the roughest games we've seen in a long time, taking almost two hours to complete. But cooler heads prevailed, and both teams came out fast and hard to try to win it. Coach Dave Barkey and Manager David Men- zies had pre warned the boys against foolish penalties and the consequences of being in the penalty box. When it was all over Port had won the championship by a score of 4-2, and took only 14 minutes in penalties and En- nismore 18 minutes. Again it was the power play doing the damage, as Port scored the winner with less than 3 minutes to play in the game. John Harman upped the lead to 3-1 at 12:18 as he picked the corner perfectly from a sharp angle. The barrage continued in the second with Geer blasting a shot under the cross-bar at 1:23, and he scored his second at the Turn to Page 21 fourney Several injuries in the Aurora game left us with only 9 skaters for the championship game, but an all out effort and smart play making were necessary to win this one. The scoring was fairly well spread out during the day, but the key man in the final game was Derek Fitzgerald with the hat trick, and Jamie Brown was superb in goal. The Juveniles have three tour- naments left this season, Jan. 5 in Ernestown, Jan. 13 in Camp- bellford, and our own in Port Perry on Feb. 9. Our last home game of league play this season will be Jan. the 8th at 9:00 p.m. against Uxbridge. Come on out and support this fine group of athletes.
