22 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, January 2, 1991 me) IU IVD 4 wo Lily Tf The Bancroft Jets defeated Manvers 3-2 to take the Bantam B championship in a re- cent tournament held In Port Perry. In photo above are Bancroft captain Dereck Thompson and MVP Dave Wadsworth, and at left Is Manvers captain Paul Lynch. This was a well- played, hard-fought hockey game that could have gone either way. In the Consolation fi- nal, Port Bantams whipped Peterborough 6-1. Scugog Overhead Doors Pee Wees On Saturday the Scugog Overhead Door Pee Wee B's hosted their annual tournament. After shaking off the affects of too much turkey and dressing, "The Doors' focused their attention on a tough team from Lindsay to kick off early morning action. Lindsay applied pressure early when they opened the scoring after only 2 minutes of play. Port then settled down and tied it on a slick effort by Kevin Gray from Kent Taylor and Matt Phillips. The second period belonged to the home squad as they scored two more to take a comfortable 3-1 lead into the 3rd. Once again "The Doors" dominated play in the final frame outscoring the opposition 2-1. The goal posts at our end in this one seemed 2 feet wide at times as the Lindsay snipers clanked countless shots off them. Scoring for Port were Kent Taylor, two goals and one assist, Kevin Gray one goal and one assist, Tim Fitzpatrick one goal, Matt Phillips one goal and one assist. Other assists went to Brad Morton, Jason Logan (2), Chris Drury, Jeff Jamieson and Kirk Swain. The recent aquisition of Devin Blair from the house league has proven to be a real bonus on defence. His play in this game was superb and he will fit in very well along the blue line. Sharp goaltending by Jamie Trick and Dylan Ferguson helped put this game in the win column. In the second game Port Perry went head to head against Beaverton. "The Doors" came out flying, scoring two unanswered goals in the first by Brad Morton and Jason Logan. It looked as though Port was going to run away with this one until the sleeping giant woke up. As soon as Port stopped hitting, Beaverton began hitting their stride and tied it up before the second buzzer. The third period belonged to Beaverton as they scored four times to eliminate Port from fur- ther competition. As it turned out Beaverton went on to paste the Oshawa Black Hawks 5-1 to take the '""'A'"' cham- pionship and Lindsay edged Oakville 3-1 to take the consola- tion round. All in all a good effort from the entire squad. Keep up the good work guys! Bantam B's win The Port Perry Sportsland Ban- tams got in their final Christmas preparation on Dec. 23, as they nipped Bowmanville Toros 4-3 at home to avenge a road loss the previous week. Scott Heasman opened the scor- ing in the first minute, assisted by Dave Bourgeois and Mike Williams. Lou Whitfield doubled the margin from Jason Phillips and that's how the period ended. In the second, the Toros counted three times to go into the third up 3-2; but Jason Coutoulakis answered with a pair of his own in the final frame. The tying goal was scored at 11:13 from Steve Desauels, and the win- ner came with 5:36 left from Desautels and Mark Cosway. Friday, Sportsland hosted their own tournament and came within an eyelash of playing in the A final before settling for the B championship. First opposition was a tenacious, hustling team from Manvers, who rode a strong goaltending effort to a 3-1 win. Port had enough quality chances to win the game but were stoned repeatedly and Manvers built up a 3-0 lead. Whitfield finally got Sportsland on the board late in the third, but Manvers withstood any late rally attempt. Williams and Phillips assisted on the goal. The Bourgeois, Todd Smart, Chad Kearns line dominated game two against Lindsay, ac- B championship cumulating 19 points in the 11-2 win. Smart led the way with a hat trick and 4 assists, Kearns also had the 'trick' and 3 assists, while Bourgeois counted once and had 5 helpers. Jeremy Norton also had a big scoring game with 1 goal and 3 assists. Phillips, Heasman, and Chad Garvock had single scores; and Whitfield, Williams, and Coutoulakis each notched an assist. Goals were key in the tour- nament format and Port kept up the pressure throughout, leading 4-1 and 7-2 at the period breaks. One extra goal for Newmarket in a 2-2 tie with Manvers would have sent Port to the A final, but the tie relegated Sportsland to the B game where they continued strong offensive play, rolling to a 6-1 win over Peterboro St. John. Phillips got the ball rolling ear- ly with his first of 2 in the game. Garvock followed up with the eventual winner at 7:09 of the first and later added a pair of assists. Kearns and Norton scored in the second, and after Peterboro had broken Mike Pashley's shutout, Phillips and Cosway closed out the scoring. Blair Prechitko pick- ed up a pair of assists in the game and Heasman had a single. The Sportsland Bantams finish 1990 sporting a 19-15-2 record and have entered 4 tournaments, win- ning 3 B championships. The team will be looking to continue its improved play in 1991 as playoffs approach. Nursing Home News by Wendy Clark I certainly hope that everyone had a very merry Christmas.
