eda A 30 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, January 2, 1991 Election win gives Mills new lease on life by Gord Mills MPP Durham East I guess all of us at one time or another, have said to ourselves, how fortunate we are in not being able to know what the future holds for us - what a relief! 1990 started out for me as the year I finally retired, after work- ing for 48 years. I did what lots of other retired folks long for. My wife and I packed up and headed down to Florida. We mainly just goofed-a-round, and talked about precious little of importance, we rode our bicycles, and walked along the beaches. Most mornings we would go for our morning walk, say "good- morning' to the same people do- ing the same thing, at least twice over. We would go off to the local store where each morning they would place a tray of cooked bacon out for samples, or so they said. I think it was for people like me, who in the interest of 'good- health' are forbidden by their wives not to have bacon for breakfast any more. That store- owner was a real smart marketing chap if you ask me. After about 5 weeks of this I told my wife that I doubted if I could "put up" with my new style of life. I had expected some sort of confrontation over my statement, however, after a married life of over 40 years it is a fair assump- tion to say that my wife had recognized some signs that all was not well with me, and my new found life style. J 2 Our mutual agreement paved the way for my eventual employ- ment at The Orono Weekly Times. It allowed me the opportunity to get to know, and to work for, one of the real gentlemen of Orono, Roy Forrester. This was followed by me being given the opportuni- ty to represent Durham East in the Ontario Legislature. The harbinger of this story, if there is one at all, would be to never retire unless you are going to be really happy with it. Since September 6th, I have taken on a new lease on life itself. From winding down I am now wound up. I have never pretend- ed to be perfect, for after all, everyone is a mixture of good and bad, right and wrong. It is our du- ty, all of us,to make the best of the good in us, and to face up to and, we hope, change that which is bad. In the first session of parlia- ment, I have supported legislation that I honestly believe will im- prove the way of life for many people in Ontario. It would be rather unrealistic of me to pretend that everything the government has done so far, is in total agreement with everyone. Rather than live in a world of make-believe, I find it's much bet- ter to be realistic. I don't think any of us like be- ing told what other people think of us, unless of course it's praise, and that isn't always easy to ac- cept. It's much harder when it isn't true. A few weeks back, after considerable thought, the Minister of Transport announced a bus operation from Port Perry to the Whitby GO Station. It wasn't a GO Train service but nevertheless it was a solution to the present situation of nothing, and a reponsible economical deci- sion as well. Following this an- nouncement it offended me to read in a local newspaper a letter to The Editor advising me that | was elected to represent Scugog's interests at Queen's Park, and not to tell people who I had met and talked to in my weekly "be hap- PORT PERRY %¥ PRINCE ALBERT UNITED CHURCH Rev. I would like to convey to the let- ter writer, and everyone in the riding, that I aim to represent all, whatever their station in life may be, and whatever their political affiliation may be, with zeal, with compassion, with humility and, above all, honesty. My representation on behalf of the people i in Scugog Township in securing a GO Train never wavered from my own standard guidelines of conduct. The fact that they did not get what they wanted should not be identified by the letter writer as any lack of in- itiative on my part, but rather part of the democratic process in decision making. In closing, I must say that I have received numerous com- ments from folks from all walks of life, in regard to my weekly "happy column." It has been well received and I shall continue with it.
