Letters io the editor No English Immersion Back Talk by Kelly Lown As | am writing this column, 1991 is quickly approaching. | decided with 1990 on its way out, to take the time and reflect on the many changes it brought--the good, the bad, and the ugly. "Personally | saw big changes in my life, | moved out of my mother's house, and | got mar- _ried. | know, marriage is gn everyday occur- rence, but a big change to those taking the plunge. Locally, many things have changed over the past year. Some have been minial, but some a big deal to others. | have compiled my own list of 1990 happenings that stick out in my mind and rated them on a cheer or a jeer basis. Cheers to businessman Lang Cope, and all participating stores for the ingenious GST cou- pons. They may not appear to be much to some, but the conceptAs great, and they are sure to cut costs fo first three months of '91 anyway. We are all going to need a little help a the new tax that rates a jeer with a capital A jeer to those responsible for continually changing the placement of stop and yield signs. For an intersection to go from a stop on one street to a four-way stop takes a little to get used to, but can be achieved. But to then change the signs again to have traffic in the oth- er direction stop instead, | can only say, I'm sur- prised there has not been a serious accident yet. Cheers to the great idea of an open air skat- ing rink on Lake Scugog. It is a great.concept to give people of all ages a chance to enjoy the winter in a new and fun way. It is also going to be a much easier way to practise your skating skills, without trying to find ice time at the arena. Jeer to the decision to not have an expansion made to Scugog arena. A second ice pad is needed more than a lot of people realize, and would have solved many ice-time squabbles. Cheers to the residents of Scugog Township who have so freely given of their time to help in the search for Julie Stanton, and Elizabeth Bain. Residents have pulled together, giving up their own time, to try to help two families end their trying times. Cheers also to the BIA for their efforts in creating more parking in downtown Port Perry. This has always been a thorn in everyone's side, and the improvements have been very no- ticeable. The past year has seen a great number of changes in small but important issues as well. We have seen our postal code change, many have seen their street name change, and street address change, mail delivery change, and cer- tain by-laws have also been amended. The street name changes, and address changes may have been a nuisance to many, and is still creating problems, but the idea be- hind it is great. Cheers to the new gmergency 21 dialing that will be coming into effect. A jeer though to one street name change. to The changing of the beloved "Ghost Road" name to "Mississauga Lane" was a bit of a let down. Some changes were made because of dupli- cation in street names (something that had to be done). This certainly wouldn't have been a factor in this name change. "Ghost Road" not "Mississauga Lane" has brought hundreds of tourists to the area, and has made Scugog lIs- land a topic of conversation in towns across Canada. Changes in two by-laws this year deserve cheers. The amendment to the littering by-law to increase the minimum fine from $2 0 to $1,000 was a much needed change. Something had to be done to stop the inconsiderate people who dump their garbage wherever they see fit. The change to the Snowmobile by-law to Sve members of the Port Perry Snowmobile Club authority to help control their own sport. was a great idea. These people see what IS going on on the trails and on the lake. Maybe now while stopping inconsiderate snowmobile drivers, they can also prove that not all operators of snow vehicles are "crazy" by stopping the ones that are. | All in all, 1990 was a typical year for most, several good ideas were launched, and several "good ideas were squashed. i 2 2 As for New Year resolutions, good luck to you all who are right now vowing to never have an- other cigarette, to stop at the third cup of coffee, and to never sink your teeth into another cherry cheese cake until the scale says to do so. The United Nations is about to issue a stern warning against Bill 178's discrimination against the English-speaking of Quebec. There is no English Immersion in Quebec. Why then, French Im- mersion in Ontario, when French is mandatory as a core subject starting in grade 4? French has been pushed on the rest of Canada in the guise of na- tional unity. Appease Quebec at any cost. That game has warr thin. Quebec will separate --- it's only a matter of time and economics. None are so blind as those that will not see! Sincerely, Dean J. Even though I work in Peter- borough now, I still live in Scugog Township and I still deeply care what goes on here. And judging by the 'Scugog touch' on the cassettes, | ducss I'can't get this place off my mind. And that's not such a bad thing, is it? Thanks Julia! Cathy Olliffe, Caesarea P.S.
