by Ken Gadsden Well here it is a new year. The resolutions are made - lose weight, quit smoking, quit drinking, control temper, work harder, nd defensively 3? You did make that resolution didn't you? If you didn't it it happen. Last week we were talking about "little things" that can lead to collisions and that you regularly see drivers do. We left off with intersections but let's carry on with them. You're stopped for a red light waiting for it to change to green. It does and you pull away. What's wrong with that sce- nario? The answer is - nothing - if you first checked left then right then left again before pulling away. If you fail to do so you could get hammered by a vehicle running the light for whatever reason. You're stopped at a stop sign waiting for a break in traffic to permit you to enter the through roadway. You are looking to t The result? A panic stop or worse, a collision. : Always look to the front before accelerating. = that? Again nothing if you take the defensive steps of scan- _ ning the intersection as you approach it, easing off the gas Land covering the brake pedal where your visibility is restricted. || the light or stop sign. much consolation. t for now we'll carry on with the "little things.' PASSING You're in a line of traffic. It's moving fairly well but that . : monkey in your gut says it isn't fast enough for you. You feel | pressured to pass at every opportunity forcing your way back 5 | = in whenever an obstruction or oncoming vehicle appears. Stop and think! Unless there's a wide open stretch of road . ahead you're not gaining time. You're gaining car langths. you | risk your life to gain a couple of car lengths. Woul like that at Las Vegas? | don't think so cause it's pretty dumb. k | : If the guy ahead is poking along, does that give you the § | right to close up the following distance until an opportunity to § pass comes along? Many drivers do draw right up to the vehi- { : { Cle they are about to pass. It's the wrong thing to do. If any- & thing, increase the following distance. This gives you the abili- ty to see further down the road and then accelerate in your § own lane before pulling out to pass. This means less time in § the passing lane and a safer pass. fis food for thought. PARKING | & need to practice common courtesy? and could lead to serious consequences such as pedestrians § E getting run down. | | Another aspect of parking is that wherever feasible you {| & should attempt to avoid backing. If you must back up either § & entering or leaving, in most cases it is safer to back in and drive out. Again we're just touching on the subject. We'll talk § 8 more about it later Cronies Clearin --~" Licensed Applicator 3m Scotchgard Carpet Protector isn't too late. Make it now and perhaps together we can make § : your left to observe the oncoming traffic. The opening shows. § ® You accelerate and enter the traffic flow. Unfortunately most 5 {| drivers accelerate while still looking left and are surprised to | £ find things have changed immediately in front of them. A pe- | § destrian or cyclist or even a vehicle that nosed out from a ser- § vice station lot is now in what was clear space a second ago. § . You're driving on a through road. As you approach side a | streets or intersections governed by traffic lights you see that & = you have the right of way so you carry on. What's wrong with & © Keep your eyes moving and be prepared for someone to run . 3 If you fail to take the defensive measures your epitaph . may say "he had the right of way," but somehow that isn't 3 We'll talk more about intersections in future columns but .
