On Sunday, December 23, Port Perry's Petite "A" team travell- ed to Oshawa for a league game against a very talented Novice "AA" team. Using this game as a tune-up for the Markham tour- ny, Port won 5-2. Our special thanks to Pam Hiltz and Mandy Smart of the Petite B's for their fine effort with us. The Markham tournament was next. Teams from as far away as St. Catherines provided top level Petite A competiton. Needless to say, the coaching staff felt that only a total team effort would pro- vide a chance at the champion- ship game. Our first opposition was Picker- ing, a team which has had Port Perry's number all season. To their surprise our checking game kept them off-balance and our passing clicked, resulting in a 4-2 victory for Port's Caldwell- Banker Petites. Cara Vander Slagt led the assault with 3 goals. Laura Hooker added the insurance goal late in the game. Janine Ham- mond set up 2 goals and Cindy Verschurren assisted on Cara's first goal. Bonni-Jo Norton's red stick assist to Laura Hooker pro- ved our quick breakaway style was confusing the Pickering team. Our aggressive goalie, Katie Senyk thwarted their shooters time and time again. With our confidence level high, our next opponent was Whitby, which has a fine young lad, Doug McDonald in goal. Shona Moase showed no mercy, scoring 5 times - set up by perfect passes - 2 from Cara Vander Slagt and 2 from Alechia Cracknell (red stick). Laura Hooker, Janine Hammond and Cara Vander Slagt rounded out the scoring and Dana Hooker another assist. Port Perry 8 - Whitby 3. Next game, overconfidence struck! Hamilton had defeated St. Catherines 5-1 and we took the St. Catherines game lightly. After the first period it was a 2-all tie. Dana Hooker scored the first of the tourney and Cara Vander Slagt added the other. In the se- cond period, our checking stop- ped, our passes went astray, our red sticks were thinking of next Christmas and Katie Senyk's goalie stick must have had a large hole in it. We were bombed 9-3! Our hopes for a chance at the final seemed dim. The girls and coaches were down but not out. Returning to play again that afternoon, we watched anxiously as Pickering defeated St. Catherines 4-2. Destiny was in our hands because a win over Hamilton would put us into the final game Sunday, versus the undefeated Oshawa team, our arch rival. The girls came out growling! Red sticks, Janna Senyk and Brooke Shanley foiled many Hamilton attempts against Katie Senyk. The first period was 5-3 in Port's favour. Cara Vander Slagt and Janine Hammond each scored twice and then Cindy Verschurren scored before the period ended. Laura Hooker's checking was a constant thorn in Hamilton's side. Her effort would produce 3 fine assists. Dana Hooker had her best game with a goal and 3 assists. Hamilton fought back to tie it up 5-5. The Port Perry girls dug a lit- tle deeper. Cindy Vershurren set up Cara Vander Slagt who made no mistake in giving Port Perry a lead they would not relinquish. Again, a beautiful passing play started by Janine Hammond to Laura Hooker, to Dana Hooker who netted the seventh and final goal. Port Perry upset Hamilton 7-5 and again, the red sticks figured in the scoring with Brooke Shanley picking up an assist. For some reason our girls have no trouble getting up against Oshawa Petite '"A's."' Sunday at 5:00 they were ready. The game started on a sour note as we received the first 4 penalties. Katie Senyk frustrated Oshawa's Allen Tweens win first game of 1991 The regular league games of the Tweens A Division have resumed again - on into 1991 we go. The Allens Siding Products Tweens played their first game of the new year against the Etobicoke Tweens and came away with a win, 6-3. Halfway through the first period, Amy Parliament put us on the scoreboard with the first goal of the game, assisted by Brandy Harris. Three minutes later Etobicoke netted one to even up the score. With less than three minutes left in the first half Etobicoke scored twice more giv- ing them a 3-1 lead. Now it was time for a pep talk, so coach Dan Lally thought. And whatever he said to those girls really worked as the Port girls were all over the opposition in the second half. Leea Kinnunen netted a beauty, with an assist by Vicki Stainton, within the first five minutes of this half. Etobicoke put on the pressure constantly but they were "no match for our Amy who, thir- ty seconds later, gave us the ty- ing goal assisted by Linda Payne. A minute and a half later Brandy netted one, assisted by Amanda Webb, giving us a one goal lead. The tension was put on the girls again and again as Etobicoke retaliated to try and get one past our goalie, Sarah Coyne. Good defence skills were shown by our red sticks - Heather Lally, Kyla McCrae, Vicki Stainton and Lisa Dodd. The fans excited shouts of encouragement echoed through- out the arena as Amy got a hat trick, assisted by Vicki. With less than 3 minutes left in the game Amanda made her debut with another goal, assisted again by Linda. Our Linda may be small but she's mighty! Our goal scoring and time keep- ing volunteers were two of our teams finest - Doug Dempsey and Colin Dodd. Bob McCrae was our team photographer, taking over Colin's job - every goal and penal- ty (heaven forbid!) has been caught in the camcorder's lens and censored, all rights reserved for team members and fans only. This weekend the Port Perry Ringette Association is hosting its annual tournament. The Allen girls play Friday evening against Niagara Falls, 9 p.m.. On Satur- day at noon in Manvers arena they play a team from Beaconsfield and again at our arena at 6 p.m. when we face Hamilton. There will definitely be good ringette played and a lot of determination shown. Niagara Falls and Hamilton were two teams our girls played in a recent St. Catharines tournament - and our girls came home with the Gold, Niagara Falls won the Silver and Hamilton won the Bronze. The boys skated hard all game and it paid off. After nine minutes of play Mark Blakley scored the first goal with assists going to Jason Whitworth and Sean Jeffreys. Twenty seconds later Whitworth put one in assisted by Blakley. Port Perry kept the pressure on during the second period. Jason scored his second goal of the game and got his third goal inthe third period. Assists on Jason's third goal went to Wade Richie and Murphy Irvine. The last few Port beat Lindsay's "B" team 2-1 and Little Britain 4-0. In both these games Port out- shot the opposition about 25 to 4. Scott Cunningham and Grant Hooker went in behind the net, stole the puck from a Woodville player, Scott then got it out to Billy who knocked it in.
