28 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, January 8, 1991 As the home stretch of the schedule approaches, all 4 teams gearing up and preparing themselves for the final drive and the "beloved playoffs.*' Scugog Lumber v.s. Gord Lewis Motors As per usual when these two fine teams meet, there isn't any cat and mouse games going on, they get right at it. Both teams had end to end rushes but as usual the goalies came up "Big" shut- ting down the big shooters. Gord Lewis got things going when Daniel Lee trapped the puck along the boards, carried it over the blueline, over to Ryan Williamson who fired it into the top corner to take the lead 1-0 at 6:11 of the first period. With 1:25 left in the first, Aaron Levy put a nice pass over to David Gainey who had one labelled for the top corner, but the quick glove of goalie Corey Branton kept the score 1-0 for Lewis Motors after one period of play. In the second period both goalies were unbeatable as they robbed the offfence time and time again. With 33 seconds left in the second period, Aaron Levy sent Justin Sheehey in over the blueline and with a nice pass in front of the net, David Gainey slammed it home to tie the score at one after two periods of play. With just 46 seconds gone in the third period, David Gainey sent Justin Sheehey in all alone on goalie Corey Branton, but a nice two leg slide kept the game tied up. Gord Lewis took the lead again at 7:13 when mark Lunel played one off the boards, up to Daniel Lee who put it on Jeff Gunn's stick and "see you later, bye it was, in the back of the net. Kevin Edwards put a nice pass over to David Gainey who tucked it nicely under the goaltender to tie the game up at 2 all. At 5:46 of the third, Ryan Williamson sent Jeff Gunn in over the blueline and after Dipsy Doodling around the defense, put it upstairs to go ahead again. With just 3:53 left in the game, Travis Pickard put it over to Justin Sheehey, in front to Aaron Levy, Hold on folks, she's all tied up again. At 2:41 Sheehey kept the puck in the Lewis zone, back to the point to Kevin Edwards and "boom" it was air born and over the shoulder of the goalie to take the lead for the first time in the game, 4-3 for Scugog Lumber. With 1:05 left in the game, Lewis Motors pulled their goalie in favour of an extra attacker. Lewis Motors had it trapped in the Scugog end and hammered away at goaltender Jonathon Froats but to no avail. Aaron Levy put it off the boards to David Gainey who fired it into the empty net to defeat Gord Lewis Motors by the score of 5 to 3. Playing in goal for Gord Lewis Motors was Corey Branton and in goal for Scugog Lumber, Jonathon Froats. Honorable mention for good hustle goes to Mark Lunel for Lewis Motors and Travis Pickard for Scugog Lumber. Good Defensive Effort goes to Casey Brown for Lewis Motors and Justin Sheehey for Scugog Lumber. Whitby Auto Wreckers v.s. Port Perry Lions The second game of the day saw the Whitby Auto Wreckers challenging the Port Perry Lions. These two teams are notorious for their close checking and good goaltending. Both goalies were having a good day blocking shots left, right and centre, sending the offence away shaking their heads in disbelief. Port Perry Lions finally lit up the scoreboard when Jamie - Clark put the puck up to Jeremy Gibson who put it into the slot for Tyler Wootton and Bingo, she's 1-0 for the Lions. With just 1:29 left in the first period, Luke Newman put a nice pass over to Brennan Malcolm who sent a low drive into the bot- tom corner to tie the game at one. With just 23 seconds gone into the second period, Adam Mahaf- fy put a nice pass over to Jeremy Gibson who rifled one high in the corner to take the lead 2-1. After this goal both gaolies got stingy, not allowing anymore scoring for the remainder of the second period. The third period got started in a hurry when Tommy Keeble threw a nice pass over to Jeremy Gibson who tucked a beauty under a sliding goalie. At 5:17 Jeremy Gibson trapped the puck in the Whitby zone and fired it through a crowd in front of the net to make the score 4-1 for the Port Perry Lions. At 4:46 Jay Fletcher scored unassisted when he caught the puck going the wrong way. At 4:06 Jay Fletcher scored his se- cond unassisted goal when he blasted one high into the top cor- ner to close the gap to 4-3 for the Lions. With 3:35 left in the game Jeremy Gibson put a nice pass in front to Tyler Wootton who slammed it home. With 1:00 left Whitby came storming back when Jay Fletcher dug it out of the cor- ner over to Gavin Baxter, to Chris Orr and it's 5-4. Seven seconds later at the :53 mark Jeremy Gib- son got loose and in she goes to defeat the Whitby Auto Wreckers 6 to 4. Playing another fine game in goal for Port Perry Lions was Shane Savage and also playing a good game in goal for Whitby was Pineridge Atoms win consolation The fortunes of the Pineridge Sports Atom #2 team has been up and down since our last update. Before Christmas in a game against Lindsay, on home ice, the team showed signs of looking ahead to Santa instead of playing hockey. Unfortunately for Port, Lindsay had come to play. At the end of the game they had skated to a 7-1 win over the home team, scoring the lone marker for Port was Scott Jeffrey unassisted. The Christmas break was need- ed as the team had been having no luck at all. After a twelve day rest the team should have been ready to play. The opposition though had other ideas as Omemee was in town for a league game last Thursday. Omemee showed no mercy as they com- pletely dominated the game from start to finish. Port's only goal was scored by Adam Hobbs unassisted. This past weekend was a heavy schedule, as Pineridge was in Manvers on Saturday for a one day tournament. The first game was against the Oshawa Bruins of the L.N.H.L.. This game was a joy to watch. The team played ex- tremely well and they were a complete reversal from the past few outings. The forward line of Adam Hobbs, Blayne Kinnunen and Jason Heyworth led the team in scoring all day. In this game the first goal was scored by Kinnunen from Hobbs and Heyworth and the second was scored by Hobbs from Kinnunen and Heyworth. The score was tied 2-2 until near the end as the Bruins scored the winner with a few seconds to go. Game two saw Pineridge up against Uxbridge. This time the team took charge early and never let up until the final whistle as they skated to a 4-1 win. Ian Parliament started the scoring early assisted by Ryan Moynes and Danny Lyons. Then it was the Jason Heyworth show as he scored a hat-trick to give Port a 4-0 lead; three assists each to Adam Hobbs and Blyane UXBRIDGE MEMORIAL 45 YEARS OF PERSONAL. Unfortunate- ly for them that over confidence was their undoing. Lindsay took the lead at the five minute mark of the first, but that was the end of their scoring for the day. Ian Parliament tied it up right away for Port, on a nice set up from Danny Lyons. After that, the line of Hobbs, Kinnunen and Heyworth took over as Jason and Adam scored to seal the 3-1 and the consolation championship. Heather Tredway played ex- ceptionally well in net to take the best effort award for the game. Overall the team had a great day, Jon Chambers played great in goal during his turn, the defence of Ryan Moynes, Colin Laird, Scott Harper and Wyatt Oyr Novice Auctioneers travell- ed to Port Hope on Jan. 6 and were stymied by a hot home team goaltender as they were forced to accept a 4-1 loss. The early part of the first period has spelled doom for our team lately and unfortunately the trend continued in this game as the host team jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead with less than 3 minutes gone in the game. To the credit of our team, however, they held the edge in play in the second and third periods and did a much better job of forechecking. We were reward- Auctioneers lose 4-1 to Port Hope Park played solid all day. The deligent work of the other forwards Scott Jeffrey, Scott Sanderson, Justin Halligan and Jamie Strickert was exceptional as they fought hard for the puck all day, great effort team. Sunday night in Omemee wrap- ped up the busy weekend. The team's excellent play from Satur- day carried over as they played a strong forechecking game that really stalled the powerful team from Omemee. Omemee took the lead in the first, but Port tied it up early in the second as Danny Lyons scored assisted by Jamie Strickert. The team played hard the rest of the way but unfor- tunately Omemee scored two more for a 3-1 win. This was a solid effort from Port as Omemee usually wins big. Keep up the good work, Pineridge. Things are starting to look good in time for playoffs. ed by a goal from Ryan McQuade (assisted by Chris Jones and Brad Johnston) in the second period. Unfortunately, Shawn Roy, the Port Hope goalie refused to let the puck by him the rest of the way. Jason Whitworth joined the Auctioneers for this game and his enthusiastic play added a little spark to our team. Chad Lance, Greg Bruton and Aaron Chambers also worked diligently for our team. Our next action will be next weekend with tournament action in Gravenhurst. GUARANTEED INVESTMENT CERTIFICATES -- ANNUAL RATES -- Rates subject to change without notice. Pee Wee house league Scala 3 Consumers Gas 0 Scalas Wrecking crew were ready for this game and came out skating, scoring the only goal of the first period. Kevin Hobbs scored with a nice wrist shot to the top corner, assisted by Jamie Irvine and Philip Donnelly. The second period saw both teams test goaltenders con- tinuously, but neither team could score. In the third period, Trevor Smith broke up the right wing and put the puck between the Gas Company's goalies pads for Scalas second goal. With one and a half minutes to play, Consumers pulled the goalie and applied some real pressure until Matt Mantle got control of the puck and hit the empty net from the blue line for Scalas third goal. Special mention to both goalies Ian Johnson and John Babcock for a great game and Johno's first shutout for the Wrecking crew. Sunday, Jan. 6, Scalas Wreckers travelled to Uxbridge to take on Canadian Tire in an ex- hibition game. Both teams put on a great show with end to end action. Uxbridge opened the scoring early in the first period on a good shot from the slot by Jayson Millman. The second period was dominated by Scalas and they were rewarded twice with goals by John Babcock and Jonathan McCourt. In the third period, the scoring started with Scalas potting two more, one by Darrin Kinnunen and Johnathan McCourt's second of the game. Uxbridge cam close again thanks to Jayson Millman. John Sax and Darrin Kinnunen both added goals to Ports total before Uxbridge got the final two of the game. This was Trevor Smith's debut as a goaltender and he put forth a good effort. It should be noted that the 6 to 4 score was over shadowed by the fact both teams played a penalty free game. Great game! Emiels 4 Scala 1 Jan. 5/91 Emiels opened the scoring at 12:58 of the first period on a powerplay with Justin Wooton scoring, assisted by Chad Mit- chell. Matt Baker made it 2-1 for Emiels 54 seconds into the second from Justin Wooton and Neal Hancock. Scala scored its only goal at 5 ot the second period with ohn Sax scoring from Greg Pu and Mark Dunn. SZ Pugh The final goal for Emiels was scored at the 7:38 mark of the third period by Robby Martyn from Neal Hancock. LA i hr i i A Li i un...
