The workshop will be in- structed by one of the Bore- lians' more experienced mem- bers, Kathryn Cleveland, whose background promises an informative and worthwhile learning experience. Ms. Cleveland is a teacher at S. A. Cawker Public School in Port Perry. She has a bachelor degree from Concordia Univer- sity in Dramatic Arts in Educa- tion as well as technical and erformance work on the pro- essional stage and for the Na- tional Film Board. Her local community theatre work includes the sound design of "Dracula" and "Picnic" for Whitby Courthouse Theatre, co-direction of the Borelians' "Agnes of God" and most re- cently, stage management of the double-casted "Glass Me- NEW TRENDS OLD FRIENDS John Deere Day 1991 | TIME: AJKA Talk about New Trends with your Old Friends at John Deere Day 1991 Drive on in to town to see what's new and spend some time with your neighbors. "The average audience goes to the theatre to see perfor- mances," states Ms. Cleveland. "Though they are affected by the whole theatrical experience whether they know it or not -- they don't see the technical side. "They don't realize all that goes on behind the scenes to bring a play to life: The light- ing, the scene changes, the placement of props, the sound the precise timing... the list goeson," she said. "The stage manager is, in ef- fect, the link between the artis- tic which occurs .on stage and the technical which occurs continued. backstage, she "When a stage manager is at his most effective, the show will be more apt to run like predicta- ble clockwork which greatly re- duces stress backstage and creates a feeling of reassurance for the actors." "This in turn enables them to concentrate fully on their act- ing. A show that is poorly stage managed will almost certainly hinder the potential quality of what you see on stage. This is why it is so important that there be effective technical peo- ple as well as actors." With the popularity of com- munity theatre growing in Port Perry to include three busy or- ganizations -- The Borelians, The Choral Society and The Millar Lights -- it would seem that the technical knowledge of someone like Kathryn Cleve- land may well be utilized. Ms. Cleveland reassures newcomers to community thea- tre not to be intimidated by what may only look hard. Anyone thinking of joining one of the community theatre groups, or who is already in- volved but wants to gain fur- ther knowledge of stage man- agement, would benefit from the workshop.
