Sl Ei a IN =i EP Yi 23527 tei Sa RE. -v The Port Perry ModJacks have grabbed a share of third place as the Central Junior C Hockey League is coming down to the final few games. Byt it wasn't easy, not by any stretch of the imagination. Points have been hard to come by for all teams in the highly competitive league this season. And the MoJacks were more than pleased to take four over the weekend with victories over the first and last place squads. On Friday night in Ux- bridge, MoJacks got an early jump on the first place Bruins and came home with a 5-3 victo- ry. And Sunday night at the Scugog Arena, the MoJacks put on a gritty display as they spot- ted the Ajax Axemen a quick 2-0 lead, then slowly battled back to win this hard hitting game 5-3. Last Tuesday night (Jan 15) in Ajax, the Axemen scored three times in the third period to trim the MoJacks 5-2. And the Ajax gang, who had a three e win steak on the line and is in a bitter strug- gle for the final playoff spot looked like they were going to do the same number when the teams hooked up Sunday at the Scugog Arena. Dan Mollen and Kevin Kearns put the Axemen ahead 92-0 before the contest was five minutes old. And were it not for some strong work by Drew Campell in the nets, the score could have been alot higher. It took MoJacks until the mid-point of the second to final- ly get on the score-board as Warren Geer snapped a shot under the cross bar on a partial breakaway. Three minutes later, Al Avery tipped a puck across the line with an assist to Phil McBride. And after 23 seconds of the third, MoJacks went ahead for the first time as Jim Vernon sta- pled a shot to the twine from the top of the face-off circle. John Lally and Avery set him up. But the Axemen got right back in the game at 5:46 as Mol- len blew a rocket past Campbell on the power play. Phil McBride got what proved to be the winner as 10:21 with a long shot from the left point through a big crowd in front of the Axemen cage. Kevin Gibson drew the assist. John Harman made sure with an empty netter in the dy- ing seconds of the game. In Uxbridge Friday night, the MoJacks never trailed as they pinned a 5-3 loss on the first place Bruins. Saptain Brad Menzies had an outstanding game as he scored once and set up three others. Linemate Warren Geer had two goals and an assist, while John Harman, the third member of the line clicked once and had two assists. This line had ten points on the night. MoJacks grab share of third place RR Jim Vernon, who has found the scoring touch again, netted the other MoJack goal with a set-up from Lally and Avery. These three have been teamed together in recent games and are playing well at both ends of the rink. . Campbell got the nod in goal and faced 34 shots. He was at his best early in the third as the Bruins were on the power play. Paul Sinclair netted two in a losing cause for the Bruins. On January 15, MoJacks went to sleep in the third period and allowed the Axemen to score three times for a 5-2 win. Menzies and Gibson did the scoring for Port Perry. SLAP SHOTS: The ModJacks have to be mighty pleased with their weekend work.
