Plant closing hurts: Mayor Scugog Mayor Howard Hall described the closing last week of the Johnson Controls plant as "devestating" for the lo- cal community. The mayor made his re- marks Monday afternoon in the council chambers, six days after Johnson announced it is closing the plant as of April 15 with the loss of 285 jobs. He went on to say that from meetings he had with company officials after the announce- ment, more than half the work- ers out of work live in the imme- diate Township area. And he said merchants in Port Perry are concerned about the impact the closure will have on the local economy. Johnson, which has operat- ed the plant for over three years making parts for the auto in- dustry, is moving production to plants it owns in the United States. Johnson owns some 80 American plants and three oth- ersin Canada. Mayor Hall said he has al- ready been in contact with On- tario trade minister (former Oshawa mayor Al Pilkey) to in- form him of the closing and to ask if there is anything the gov- ernment can do to find a compa- ny to locate in Port Perry. The Mayor said he has yet to get a reply from Mr. Pilkey, but given the state of manufac- turing in the province these days, he is less than optimistic that another company is going to come to Port Perry to set up shop. Recycling deal in the works Scugog Township is work- ing to reach an agreement with Durham Region that would al- low small retail businesses to take their recyclable garbage to the local transfer station. Both Scugog Mayor Ho- ward Hall and Regional council- lors Yvonne Christie who is a member of the Region's solid waste committee, said Monday they feel an agreement can be reached. The issue surfaced in the last couple of weeks when sever- al small businesses in Port Perry were turned away when they tried to leave recyclables (cardboard, bottles, cans) at the Transfer Station on Durham Road 8. It is Regional policy to ac- cept household recyclables only at the Transfer Station, said Mayor Hall. It is only in the last couple of weeks that the Region has enforced the ban on busi- nesses. They have been told to haul their recyclables to the Durham Centre in Whitby. One local businessman told the Star last week he can't af- ford the time to make a trip to Whitby to get rid of recyclables. He said he may just bag up the cardboard, glass and tin cans and leave them for the reg- ular garbage which winds up in alandfill. "We should do something fast (to correct this) because some small business people are starting to sour on the whole idea of recycling," said the May- or. One idea that is being ex- plored would be for Scugog Township to pay for the cost of placing a bin at the Transfer Station which would be strictly for use by small, local retailers. Scugog would pay to have the bin trucked to the Recycling centre in Whitby when it fills up. The mayor said he hopes the Township and the Region can come to an agreement soon to resolve this issue. 24 RICHARD APPLETON Buy Old and Make New A Solid, Profitable Investment ANTIQUE FURNITURE STRIPPING & FINISHING 985-9649 VALENTINE SPECIAL DINNER (dinners include appetizer or soup, coffee or tea, and dessert) RESERVATIONS REQUIRED 655-8911 Hwy. 12 - North of Brooklin Lic.
