Mayor Howard Hall, who was upset by the sudden resig- nation said he had no choice but to accept it with regrets. On Monday afternoon, council heard from Captain Richard Miller and training of- ficer Lt. Bill Hueston from the Caesarea Fire Hall. They said this new equip- ment (the boat and special sur- vival suits) is needed now to protect firefighters when they are called upon to rescue people who fall through the ice of Lake Scugog. ~ "There have been times when the safety of our own men has been dis-regarded, and the department is not going to put (men) in that position again," said Capt. Miller. He was referring to the in- cident off Caesarea last Decem- ber when two elderly ice fisher- men went through thin ice. One died later at hospital. The department did not have the proper equipment designed specifically for rescues of this kind. "We can't say no and not try to rescue people," said Capt. Miller to council. Because the ice in Scugog will be starting to go out in a few short week, the department wants the equipment bought immediately. That means taking the funds from the 1991 budget, which has yet to be approved. ( h Please recycle this newspaper \ po ) ! { 3 ! # §
