Tweens win gold Game 1 Port Perry's Pineridge Sports Tween C team met Pickering for their first of three games together on Friday night. The game open- ing goal was at just 2 minutes and 43 seconds into the period by Pickering. Port came back soon after with Marci Zuly passing to Jenny Storms to tie the game. The next two goals, one for each of the teams kept the game see-sawing until a short handed goal from Natasha Burgess to Jennifer Elliott gave Port Perry the lead. Goaltending was an active area with Amy Sinclair stopping Pickering's attempts at scoring. Passing skills put into play from our end up to Pickering's again paid off with Joan Anderson pass- ing over to Marci Zuly to go ahead in the first period. Pickering came back with some inner strength and proceeded to go ahead with two more goals before the end of the first period, leaving the two teams going into the se- cond period with a tie. Penalties were abundant dur- ing the second period and with each of the teams sitting off 2 players a piece. Port did some ex- cellent ring stealing from the Pickering team and the passing skills of Marci Zuly to Jenny Storms saw a go-ahead goal at 3:17 of the second period. Picker- ing again came back with their strong defence and stick checking to score the tying goal and go ahead goal with just six minutes left in the period. Pickering spread their lead with a goal seconds after their last to go ahead 1 goals. The Port team turned on the steam and got their act together with Julie Ball scoring single handedly closing the gap. Passing paid off with Joan Anderson receiving Marci Zuly's pass to tie the game with 2 minutes left. Strong defence for both teams during the last few minutes left these teams with a tie. Game 2 After an end to end battle of two equally matched teams on Friday night, the Port Perry and Picker- ing Tween 'C' teams met again Saturday afternoon. The Port Perry team seemed more fired up and were constantly in the Picker- ing end but was unable to put the ring past the Pickering goalie. Finally at 5:13 minutes left in the first period Joan Anderson carried the ring into the Picker- ing end and dropped a pass to Julie Ball who rifled it into the net. With only 42 seconds left in the first period Pickering finally got on the board and whistled one past Amy Sinclair. With seconds left on the clock, Julie Ball pick- ed up the ring and headed towards the net and fired the ring into the net, but the buzzer had sounded a split second before nullifying her wrist shot, leaving both teams again evenly scored as had occurred in their first game together on Friday night. Port Perry quickly started the scoring on a quick pass from Jen- cellent shots, on an excellent pass from Natasha Burgess. Port Perry's final goal was scored by Marci Zuly after perseverance with her many tries, from a set up by Joan Anderson. Pickering ended off the games scoring with a goal at 4:21 making the final score 7 to 3 for Port Perry. There was a lot of close check- ing by the defence players, Melissa Pereman, Jenna Norton, Melissa Dawson and Amanda Clouthier, keeping the ring in Pickering's end during most of the game. Numerous penalties on both sides worked in Port's favour, ending with a well deserv- ed win. Brutal shoulder block Mel! Thanks to Natasha Burgess and Jennifer Elliott for helping to strengthen our team once again. Game 3 In the third and final game bet- ween Port Perry's Pineridge Sports Tween C team and Picker- ing's Tween C team it was the same as the previous two meetings, end to end. The skating was fast and furious for both teams with both goalies making numerous saves. Good show Amy. Port's defence worked hard all night especially Jenna Norton and Melissa Pereman. There was no scoring until Pickering got on the board at 9:27. It took Port Perry almost another five minutes to get on the board with a nice pass from Marcy Zuly to Julie Ball who quickly flicked it into the net. Two minutes later Pickering went ahead again at 2:39. With 29 seconds left to go Joan Anderson tucked one in from Marcy Zuly and Melissa Pereman, leaving the two teams tied at the end of the first period. Almost 6 minutes went by with end to end skating before Picker- ing got on the board first again, and seconds later Jenny Storms from Natasha Burgess tied it up again. Six seconds later Pickering whized down the ice and tucked one behind Amy giving Pickering the win of this game. After the three games the two teams were still tied with three points a piece, causing them to go into a mini championship over- time period. The championship game consisted of a five minute the Port squad. period and sudden death overtime period if they were still tied. With only seconds left in the five minute period Pickering fired the ring at Port's net and the buzzer went as Amy caught the ring as it went into the net. The referee said the goal didn't count because the buzzer beat the ring, causing the game to go into sudden death overtime. The same end to end caused lots of excitement both on the ice and in the stands. At 2:05 Joan Anderson unassisted rifleu the ring into the net giving the gold medal's to Port Perry and the silver to Pickering. It was a great series between the two teams and congratulations to Amy Sinclair for being chosen M.V.P.
