NS - | | | j | | | 10 -- PORT PERRY STAR REAL ESTATE -- Tuesday, February 12, 1991 Kormos to speak at NDP meeting The Honourable Peter Kormos, Ontario's Minister of Financial Institutions, will be the guest speaker at the Durham East NDP Provincial Riding Association An- nual General Meeting on Sunday, February 24. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. in the Lecture Hall (C113) at Durham College, 2000 Simcoe St. N., Oshawa. The annual general meeting will be followed by Mr. Kormos as the guest speaker. Mr. Kormos, who is also On- tario's Minister of Consumer and Commercial Relations, was first elected to represent the Ontario Riding of Welland-Thorold in a by-election in November, 1988. He was re-elected in the general elec- tion of Sept. 6 Prior to his current position, Mr. Kormos was the NDP's critic for the Office of the Solicitor General and automobile in- surance reform. As Minister of Financial Institutions, Mr. Kor- mos is responsible for areas and offices which include automobile and other types of insurance, deposit institutions, the Ontario Securities Commission and pensions. As Consumer Minister, he is responsible for such diverse areas as consumer protection and business practices, public safety through technical standards and the registration of personal and real property, company records and birth, marriage and death certificates. Mr. Kormos is a graduate of Osgoode Law School and has a Bachelor of Arts Degree from York University and a diploma in social work from Niagara Col- lege. He practiced criminal law until being elected as a Welland City Councillor in 1985. He has also served on boards of directors of the Big Brothers of Niagara South and Community Legal Services of Niagara South. During the annual general meeting, members will elect the local riding association's ex- ecutive for the next year and will review its constitution. Durham East MPP Gord Mills, who is the Parliamentary Assistant to Solicitor General Mike Farnan, will also discuss his first six months as the local member of parliament. Mr. Kormos will be speaking in the Lecture Hall at approximate- ly 7:30 p.m. There is no admission cost, although donations will be accepted. Interested members of the public are welcome to attend. The statue will be on dis- play at the Scugog Library for the next several weeks before it goes to a permanent home at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa. Briley Is a full time firefighter in Scarborough. He was over-joyed when the War Museum agreed to purchase his horse and rider. He brought various creatures that are related to prehistoric times, that we could touch, such as the crocodile, toad, common boa constrictor, and a turtle. Our school librarian bought new books with many topics. Some included picture books to enhance the reading program. The Gr. I's and 2's visited a Health Carnival Presented by the Durham Health Unit in the gym. They participated in activities regarding: Hearing, Safety, and Healthy Habits. The Gr. 1's are beginning a science unit called "Busy Bodies." The Gr. 2's have started their Fairy Tale unit. They have been reading both old & new versions of Fairy Tales. The Gr. 3 class attended S.A. Cawker P.S. to see the Prologue of the arts, a modern version of Rumplestiltskin. The Gr. 4 class is studying Tropical Rainforests. They are expressig adventures through writing journals. They have chosen study teams, and each group must decorate their own part of the classroom. They are also reading Folk Tales from the Jungle. In French, they are creating their Family Tree. The grade 6 class has been busy with activities including the ukelele and a folk art project. Special thanks to Mrs. Hooker for her time and effort.
