Junior ringette On Sunday, February 16 the Ivory Forest Juniors played host to Ajax. both teams peppered the goalies with a good number of ac- currate shots on goal. Tracy Pelow played a steady game bet- ween the pipes coming up with some key saves, while at the op- posite end of the ice the Ajax goalie received a lot of help from the goal posts. Port Perry scored their first goal early in the game. Lyndsay Dutkewich scored at the 13:23 mark on a pass from Karen Kett. A minute later Ajax tied the score. In the last five minutes Ajax scored the go ahead goal on- ly to find the score tied again thir- ty seconds later. Jennifer Josephson passed the ring to Megan Marlowe who slipped it past the Ajax goalie to end the period in a 2-2 tie. During the second period Port Perry scored the next two goals. Goal three was scored on a solo effort by Lyndsay Dutkewich with goal four going to Karen Kett who was assisted by Denna Lovering and Val Payne. However in the last four minutes Ajax scored twice to tie the score at 4-4 where it remained. Next weekend Port Perry will be participating in the Pre-lims which will determine which team will be travelling to North Bay to take part in the Provincials. Sportsiand Bantams advance to semi-finals Port Perry Sportsland Bantams advanced to the 0.M.H.A. semi- finals by eliminating Newmarket in their best of five quarter final series. Sportsland won in Newmarket Friday by a 5-3 count to complete a series sweep after a pair of 7-2 wins last weekend. Newmarket were on top of their game and Port lacked polish as the home team jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. Dave Bourgeois tied the game at 1 when he scored from a scramble on a play set up by Chad Kearns and Lou Whit- field. Newmarket counted again before the period ended to lead 2-1. Micheal Williams tied the game + again-in the second, blasting a hard shot from the slot after be- ing set up by Jason Phillips and Kearns. The goaltenders, Mike Pashley and Mike Cass made that score stand until after the intermission. Scott Heasman finally put Port ahead for the first time, blasting Kearns pass from the blueline. Bourgeois drew the second assist on the play. Whitfield then stole a puck in the Newmarket end and - fed Steve Desautels, who fired a bullet from the slot to put Port up by 2. The home team didn't give up and scored again on a break midway through the final period, but Heasman put it on ice with his second point drive of the game. Phillips had the helper on the final goal. Coaches Pete Christie, Sandy Garvock, and Tim Brooks will now be preparing the team for their semi-final series with En- nismore. Paul Griffen's rink of Ian Griffen, Terry Howsam and Roger Watson dropped to the B side after their first game but rebounded to win the next four games. The four- some were eliminated in the B semi-final by the local Sutton team. The Ken Jeffrey team of Bill Tredway, Earl Mayes, and Tim Cullen went undefeated to the A side semi-final but dropped two close games to be forced out. The Bruce Peters entry of Dave Tingle, John Bredin and Grant Stone were forced out after the se- cond game. Final preparations are being completed this week for the Pro- vincial Elementary Curling Championships which are being held here in Port Perry. Opening Ceremonies get under way Fri- day morning Feb. 22 with action through to Sunday February 24. Plan to attend over the weekend. This coming Sat., Feb. 16, Port Perry is hosting the Junior Mix- ed zone competition. Port Perry has an entry being skipped by Jason Guindon. The Labatt's Oshawa Major League concluded its season on Wednesday Feb. 6 with Gary Grant's Uxbridge team of Greg Curling Corner™ ' Nelson, Randy Grant, and Paul Hillaby taking the honours and the $800 first prize. At the end of round robin play there was a three way tie for the fourth and final play-off spot. Ian Dobson defeated Clare Robinson in the first tie-breaker while Nelson Brouse drew a bye. Dobson then ousted Brouse to clinch the last spot in the play-offs. - The semi-finals had first place Barry Acton defeating Ian Dob- son while second place Scott Howey was eliminated by third place Gary Grant. The all Ux- bridge final of Grant & Acton saw | the Grant squad take control when they scored a three in the middle ends and were never real- ~ ly threatened after that. The Grant team now travel to Milton for the Association of Com- petitive Curlers of Ontario Pro- vincial Finals on Mar. 1-3 where several thousand dollars 'will be up for grabs.
