Simm ie, Sormtey Sones - ---- -- 24 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, February 19, 1991 --Atom house league results-- With Saturday, February 16 be- ing the last game of the regular season, all 4 teams were making last minute changes in prepara- tion of the "Beloved Play-offs." The Ultimate Match-up was Gord Lewis Motors taking on the high flying Whitby Auto Wreckers in the first of two games. The game was Even-Steven for "the first six minutes of the first period, due to some nice goalten- ding by Ryan Puckrin and Corey Branton. Time and time again these two goalies put on quite a show, making both offences wonder what they had to do to score on these two guys. Finally, at 3:44, Whitby Auto Wreckers' Big Luke Newman, put a nice pass up to Chris Jamieson over to Gavin Baxter who was in all alone on the Lewis goalie and scored beating him with a good head fake and tucking it under the sliding goaltender. Both teams kept the pressure on the opposing goalies but there wasn't anymore scoring in the first period with the score remaining 1-1. The second period started quick- ly when Scott Willman put a nice pass in the slot to Scott Hefferin, over to John Reed who threaded the needle to put the puck just in- side the far goalpost to give Lewis Motors the lead 2-1. Whitby Auto Wreckers was knocking on the Lewis door after having them hemmed in their own zone for quite a few minutes, but the Lewis goalie wouldn't let them in. At the 1:23 mark, Paul Shrigley set John Reed up in front and - thank you very much - it's 3-1 for Lewis Motors. With the second period winding down and just 25 seconds left, Scott Willman put the puck back to John Reed who unleash- ed a wicked shot to put the Lewis team ahead 4-1 and complete his hat trick. The third period got going in a hurry with the Auto Wreckers moving the puck in the Lewis end of the rink and keeping it there. The first 3 minutes belonged to Whitby as they hammered away at the Lewis goalie, but to no avail. At 6:06, after stopping a shot, the Lewis goalie, Corey Branton, put a pass up to Scott Willman who caught Jeff Gunn coming off the bench and was in on a breakaway and scored on a hard low shot to the corner. With 5 minutes left, Jay Fletcher was in on the Lewis goalie on a breakaway, but was turned away empty handed after a good two leg slide. Again the Auto Wreckers hammered away at the Lewis goal and with the period ticking away the 'Never Say Die" Auto Wreckers scored, when Jay Fletcher put a nice pass over to Chris Jamieson in front of the Lewis net and beat the Lewis - goalie from Point Blank Range on a hard shot to the corner to end the game 5-2 in favour of Gord. Lewis Motors. Playing in goal for Gord Lewis Motors was Corey Branton and Ryan Puckrin played goal for Whitby Auto Wreckers. The second game of the day featured the Port Perry Lions and the Lake Scugog Lumber Kings. The first period got off to a quick start with Jeremy Gibson trapping the puck in the Scugog zone and unleashing a quick shot past a screened Scugog goalie to take the early lead 1-0. Shortly after the Lions scored, the Scugog boys turned up the heat a bit when they started taking target practice at the Lions' goalie, Shane Savage, but to no avail. After the Lions took the puck into the Scugog end of the rink, and goalie Jonathon Froats made two key saves, defenceman Kevin Ed- wards put a lead pass up to Mark Sauter over to David Gainey who blasted one past a sliding Shane Savage to tie the game at 1 all at the 0:38 second mark. The second period was action packed as both teams had their offence moving the puck into the other teams end and blasting away at the goalie, but both goalies Shane Savage & Jonathon Froats were up to the challenge. At the 8:10 mark of the second period, Justin Sheehey (The Cat) put a quick pass up to David Gainey who was flying down the left wing and was in all alone on the Lions' goalie. David Gainey made a good move to get around the goalie but a good poke check stymied the young sharp shooter. At 4:30 Aaron Levy was in all alone on the Lions' goalie, only to have him make the big save and keep the score at 1-1. The period wound down with neither team scoring and the fans were on the edge of their seats because both teams were playing a wail of a game. The third period got off to another fast start with both of- fences shaking their heads in disbelief as they were being robb- ed repeatedly. At 8:07, Kevin Ed- wards put a nice pass on Justin Sheehey"s stick and then over to Doug Short in the slot and - see you later, bye - it's 2-1 for Scugog Lumber. Try as they might, the Lions were being forechecked in- to the ice only to have Scugog Lumber, come up with the puck and have another series of shots on the Lions goalie. With this be- ing a 2-1 game, and the time click- ing away, the fans were doing a little nail-biting. The clock said 3:25 when Kevin Edward banked one off the boards to Doug Short up to the Cat, Justin Sheehey, and he had a break on the Lions goal only to be turned away by a nice pad save. Tweens compete in tourney The Allen Siding Products Tweens played four games of ringette over the weekend in Oshawa's annual tournament. These girls played in an "AA" category whereas our team is rated an "A" team. The competi- tion was tough but Coach Lally felt the games would be beneficial for the team as it heads into the preliminaries starting this Wednesday. Game 1 vs. Oshawa Oshawa was on the scoreboard within the first fifteen seconds of the game. Two more goals were scored by the opposition and the game ended 3-0 in favour of the team that mot-o-vates. Game 2 vs. London London put themselves on the scoreboard within two minutes in- to the game. The Allen girls played one of their better games this year. Deanna Dempsey pop- ped one in with the assistance of Brandy Harris and Amanda Webb 4 minutes later, but London was out for a win. They scored three more goals before the end of the first half. Into the second period, and Lyn- da Payne scored an unassisted goal past the London goalie. Back and forth, end to end the ring went. Kyla McCrae, Lisa Dodd, Heather Lally and Vicki Stainton worked hard on defence keeping "the opposition at bay. Marci Zuly made a pass over to Amy Parlia- ment who, in turn, passed it to Deanna positioned at the corner of London's net. Deanna's stick seized the ring and Voila! - another beauty of a goal. Despite our hard checking and passing, London won 5-3. Game 3 vs. Markham By this time our 6:30 a.m. games had taken its toll on the team. Deanna scored the team's one and only goal with the assistance of Amanda and Bran- dy. The score ended 7-1 for Markham Game 4 vs. Cambridge This morning we were all able to sleep in until 6:00 a.m., giving everyone a fresher start. Goalie Sarah Coyne stopped shot after shot on goal. Amanda started the scoring with a goal, assisted by Brandy. Two minutes later Amy scored from passes by Marci and Lynda. The score was 3-2 for Cambridge going into the second half. Amanda then grabbed the ring, passed it to Lynda. Just before Cambridge's red stick checked her the ring was passed to Amy who netted a beauty - all within seconds of the beginning of the second half. Good pass work by Deanna and Amy gave Brandy the advantage of another goal with less than two minutes left in the game. The score was 4-4 and the fans were content to see a tied score but the Allen Tweens wanted a win and proved they could do it. With one second left on the clock, good teamwork was displayed by Brandy and Amy as they passed the ring over to Amanda who net- ted the final goal, thus breaking the tie in Port's favour. The final score was Port Perry 5, Cam- bridge 4. Despite the fact the team didn't place in the tournament it was felt by the players and coaching staff the games were beneficial to the team as it meets Whitby in the first game of th preliminaries Wednesday night in the Oakwood arena. This is a busy time of year for many of our team members. Many are also involved in basket- ball, riding lessons, Sunderland Music Festival, curling and science fair projects, just to men- tion a few. Many thanks to Marci Zuly who played for the team over the weekend tournament. Marci's grandparents came to some games and enjoyed it immensely. Leea Kinnunen's broken collar- bone is mending nicely and we were glad to see Leea and her mom out to cheer the team on. Floor hockey Senior Boys In Senior Boys Floor Hockey played at the R.H.
