TE av vw ines" EL i ee wee i a Cre Scouts brave Lake Scugog by David Collins The 1st Cartwright Scout Troop was on the move again this weekend. The boys and leaders participated in the District Scout - Guide Week camp held in Palmer Park over the weekend. The boys decided, as part of their efforts toward the Silver Ex- plorer's badge, they would hike the 30K across Lake Scugog from the boat launch in Caesarea to the camp. Not only did they walk it, they carried full packs and pulled other equipment on toboggans. The walk was gruelling - the leaders were amazed at the deter- mination exhibited on a walk that seemed like 60K and took nearly 8 hours because of the conditions. You may recall it was bitterly cold on Saturday - so cold, in fact, that some of the stoves wouldn't stay lit. Everything froze within minutes. But our champs, along with 5 other groups of boys persevered through it all and slept soundly in their tents all night. The camp ended, however, on a real down. Sometime in the night between 2 and 5 a.m., someone stole the flags and poles represen- ting five of the groups which had been lashed to the fence surroun- ding the ball diamond where they were camped. They also took a 12 foot long banner saying 1st Cart- wright Boy Scouts. The flag poles alone will cost almost $70.00 to replace. The flags? They were the individual troop flags from Cannington, Ux- bridge, Port Perry, 1st Scugog, and our newly formed Pine Ridge District Venturer Company - some of these flags can never be duplicated because they tell the tradition and history of the troop noted by the various badges sewn on the flag. Our own Cartwright banner? If we're really, lucky, we may be able to replace it for a couple of hundred dollars. Needless to say, we are not hap- py campers. Of what possible use is a 12 foot Scout banner to anyone but our Group? If this was a joke, it was a cruel one. It takes a tremendous amount of effort to raise sufficient funds just to run our programmes, train and outfit our leaders in proper uniform without having senseless van- dalism cost us more than we can afford. A nice welcome Prince Albert Church welcom- ed Adam and Eric Forrest into their fold on Sunday. Eric and Adam were baptized. Rev. Bob explained the meaning of the ser- vice to the Sunday School children. It is so refreshing to hear babies crying in church. They represent new life & mean- ing to our church family. Let's hope their parents Sharon and David bring them out regularly. Sandy Moore is slightly better but we should all say a prayer or two for him. We miss him. I was sorry to hear that Grace Beacock is under the weather. Mrs. G. Wannamaker of Seagrave was a supper visitor of Les and Grace Beacock recently. Last Sunday, at the congrega- tional supper, a video was made about life with our church. It's fun to remind our children how they used to climb under the seats. Many people have such good memories. It's a nice place to go to feel at ease and accepted for what you are. Many good conver- sations were developed while we were up to our elbows in dish water. Mrs. Mary Devitt of Oshawa was with her sister Grace Beacock for a visit recently. Some hearty souls enjoyed skating with the Sunday school last Sunday. Many thanks to Doug Moynes, & Melissa Pereman for helping Mrs. Hunter. Mrs. Turn to Page 30 As part of their efforts towards the Silver Explorers badge, scout troops hiked across Lake Scugog on Saturday.
