Petites gear to defend all- After finishing the regular Cen- tral Ontario Ringette season, the L.G.A. Petites have been gearing up to defend their Central Ontario Ringette Championship from last year. The format for the playoffs IS a round-robin series with Port Perry, Mariposa and Warkworth. The first game of the round- robin was against the Mariposa Petites at the Oakwood arena on the north shore of scenic Lake Scugog. It didn't take these two fine teams long to get at it as both teams were flying from the open- ing whistle. Mariposa lit up the scoreboard first when they scored just 1 minute and thirty-three seconds into the game. At 12:30, Jennifer Elliott blocked a clearing pass by the Mariposa red stick and scored on a rocket to the lower corner, to tie things up 1 all. At 10:42, Pam Hiltz kept the ring in the Mariposa end of the rink and after making a good move tucked one under a sliding Mariposa goalie to take the lead 2-1. Mariposa tied the score at 2 when they scored at the 8:27 mark of the first period. Ten seconds later Port took the lead again 3-2 when Jenny Pashley put a good TYPESETTER WANTED IMMEDIATELY The Port Perry Star requires a person to work one day per week as a typesetter. At 7:27 Geni Taylor fed Pam Hiltz in the slot and 'thank you very much' it was in the net. Natasha Burgess grabbed the Pee Wee HL hockey Emiels 4 - Larocque 3 Another close game between these two teams who are deter- mined to give their coaches grey hair each time they play. This game was not decided un- til there was only seven minutes left and Matt Baker came to the rescue of Emiels to win the game. The first period ended tied 1 to 1 with Matt Baker scoring his first of the game from Neal Hancock and Noah Smith for Emiels and Brad Strickert replying for Laroc- que from Steven Elliot and Chris Needham. Emiels openéd the scoring in the second period with Noah Smith scoring from Neal Hancock The Port Perry High School Midget Girls' Volleyball team swept the opposition at last Wednesday's LOSSA semi- finals held at the high school. The Midget met G.L. Roberts in their first match at won 15- 11, and 15-2. The next match pitted the team against St. Mary's, again with Port coming out on top 15- 6,and 15-11. The Rebels final game was yet another victory, this time over Father Austin by scores of 15-13,and 15-11. The Midget girls will play in ring in the Mariposa corner, went around the net and sunk a super shot high in the top corner to ex- tend Ports lead 5-2. With time winding down in the first period, Natasha Burgess kept the ring in the Mariposa end over to Jennifer Elliott and its past the quick goalie to end the and Matt Baker, but Larocque came back with two straignt trom Jeff Whitfield and Brad Strickert again, both unassisted, to go into the third period leading 3 to 2. The third period was close, but Emiels prevailed with Jeremy Stevens tying the game up on a powerplay from Chad Mitchell. The Emiels boys are really get- ting into the powerplay fun and they did not have any penalties called against them in the whole game. Matt Baker won the game for Emiels, scoring from Neal Han- cock and Chad Mitchell. The line of Neal Hancock, Matt Baker and Noah Smith played super and deserves special mention. LOSSA victory the LOSSA (Lake Ontario Sec- ondary School) finals at G.L. Roberts tonight (Tuesday), and go on to DYSSA (Durham-York Secondary School) on Friday at Brock. The Junior, and Senior girls volleyball teams were not as fortunate in LOSSA semi-final play. The Junior squad lost their two matches to Brock, and Per- eyma. The Senior team played Wednesday in Courtice and was put out of further action by G.L. Roberts, and Courtice High Schools. Immaculate Conception junior girls basketball team finished second in a tournament held at their school on Wednesday. With the score being 6-2 and in all fairness to the Mariposa goalie, she was like a duck in a shooting gallery. Time after time she would come up big, shutting the high powered offence down. The second period got off to a [ast start when Port turned the heat up a bit more. At 14:15 Natasha Burgess took control of the ring in the Mariposa corner, came out in front of the net and put one high, to go ahead 7-2. Mariposa got one back when they scored at 12:28. Natasha Burgess Ontario title scored another unassisted goal on a screen shot to beat the Mariposa goalie cleanly. At 8:04 Diane Vanderligt put a nice pass over to Amanda Wakeford in the slot and she fired one just inside the post to make the score 9 to 3. Diane Vanderligt lugged the ring out of the corner, over to Natasha Burgess who scored on the tired goalie. At 4:46 Mariposa scored and with just 44 seconds left in the game scored another one to make the final score 10-5 for Port Perry 1.G.A. Petites. Playing in goal for Port Perry was Christie Aldridge.
