Australian exchange student in Port Perry for one year Linda Davies has come from the land down under to spend one year in the great white north. During her stay, the 17-year- old Australian exchange stu- dent is being hosted by mem- bers of the Port Perry Rotary Club. She is attending Grade 12 at Port Perry High School. In the one month Linda has been in Port Perry, she has al- ready made quite a splash on the high school swim team. She also joined the school's senior wind ensemble (band). The ensemble won first place at the Sunderland Lion's Music Festival. Linda has studied trombone for nine years. As for the schooling, Linda told the Port Perry Star that she's finding Canadian educa- tion different from that back home. First off, she's enrolled in sev- eral subjects she has never studied before. "The school system is differ- ent as well," she commented. In Port Perry, students at- tend four 85-minute classes a day. In Australia, classes are much shorter. Eight classes, each 40-minutes in length, are held each day. PPHS follows a four-day ro- tation timetable, while Linda's school in Australia follows a Monday to Friday timetable. Uniforms are worn to school in Australia and students eat outside everyday because cafe- terias are non-existent in schools. Outdoor dining isn't as bad as it might sound. In Australia the mercury never dips below 8 degrees celsius. But that feels cold after a summer of 42 de- gree celsius temperatures, Lin- da said. Although there is no lan- guage barrier between Austra- lians and Canadians, some common phrases are quite dif- ferent. Linda recounted one incident when she asked her host moth- er to get something out of the "boot." The boot, of course, is the trunk of a car. Most of her Canadian ex- change will be spent in Port Perry, but Linda and other ro- tary exchange students in the area will be travelling across Canada and the United States. Although the exchange stu- dents can list different coun- tries they want to visit, Linda is pleased with her destination. "Canada was my first choice," she told the Star. "I have a lot of friends who have come over here. They al- ways say that Canadians are very friendly. And they are." Linda was responsible for her 2) Gtonemoo; a v Care @ eave? Rotary club convenor Earl Mayes told the Star that the ex- change program is more than an educational program for the students -- it's also an educa- tion for the host families and the community. While in Canada, Linda is ex- pected to give presentations to community and school groups about Australia and the differ- ences between the land down under and Canada. At present, she is staying with Dr. Bob Allin, his wife Les- ley and daughters Meredith, 17, and Suzie, 15. Four other Rotary Club fami- lies will host Linda during her stay. They are Hugho Stiller, Jim Lawrence, Al Bertrand and Paul Burnett. Australian exchange student Linda Davies is staying in Port Perry for one year.
