20 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 5, 1991 "End of the line for the hard luck MoJacks The Port Perry ModJacks have béen eliminated from post-season play as they fell 4-1 to the Bowmanville Eagles last Friday evening in Bowman- ville. This victory by the Eagles gave them the best of seven se- ries four games to two and put them into the Central Junior C final against the Uxbridge Bruins. The Eagles also took game five over the ModJacks on Feb. 27 by a score of 5-4. In the series clincher in front of a full house at the Bow- manville Arena, Eagles went on the attack in the first period with a pair of power play mark- ers by Brad Robinson and Jeff Rohr. And they peppered net- minder Drew Campbell with 18 shots, while holding the Mo- Jacks tojust eight. Gareth Stone gave the Ea- : gles a 3-0 lead with a short- handed marker in the second before Bill Lawrenson finally clicked for the MoJacks on a power play with Coulson and Arsenault drawing the assists. Andin the third, the Eagles again went on the attack firing 20 shots at Campbell. The one goal was by Nick Dennis late in the game. Eagles took just six minors in this one, and the ModJacks took eight. GAME FIVE ModJacks got into an early hole in the pivotal game five last Wednesday night in front of alarge crowd at the Scugog Are- na. Eagles jumped into a fast 3- 0 lead in the first six minutes on markers by Shane Armstrong Jeff Rohr and Nick Dennis. And though the ModJacks twice fought back doggedly to tie the score, they could never jumpinto alead. Chris Arsenault and John Harman cut the margin to 3-2 before the end of the first peri- od. And when Arsenault man- aged to shovel a loose puck just over the line for his second of the game at 3:36 of the middle frame to knot the score at three- each, it looked like the MoJacks were starting to build some mo- mentum. They put on all kinds of pressure and had all kinds of de- cent scoring chances, but Ea- gles Dennis with his second made it 4-3. Late in the period, the Mo- Jacks tied things again with Al Avery finishing off a nifty pass- ing play from Jim Vernon and Mike Coulson. Eagle captain Glen Camp- bell got what proved to be the game winner at 5:29 of the third as he deflected a shot from in close on the power play. Their final goal of the game was into an empty MoJack net with just seconds to play. MoJack goalie Dwayne Mackie appeared a bit un- steady early in the match, but settled down as the game wore on and made some fine stops. Todd Taylor, Warren Geer and Phil McBride sat this one out with injuries. Trev McIn- "tyre left in the second with a shoulder injury, leaving the Mo- Jacks mighty thin along the blue line. SLAPSHOTS: The MoJacks were hobbled with injuries through this playoff series. In fact, injuries were some- thing the team had to live with throughout the entire season. I don't remember a MoJack PPHS girls The Port Perry High School Midget girls' volleyball team captured gold at DYSSA last Friday. In the first match the Rebels met up with some stiff competi- tion in Stouffville. Stouville fin- ished first in York Region, and Port finished first in Durham Region. The two teams split their games with Stouffville winning the first 16-14, and the Rebel squad the second by a score of 15-11. Port then met Cardinal Cart- er High School from Wood- bridge, and Brock High School splitting matches with both. The two teams with the most points went on to the champion- ship game. This pitted Port against the Brock squad once again. "Port had defeated Brock for the LOSSA crown earlier this season. In the final match the scores were for Port Perry 17-15, Brock won the second 15-13, and Port Perry the third and de- ciding game 15-8. The Rebels claimed the gold medal, while Brock had to set- tle for the silver. Midgets The Port Perry Midget A squad is one victory away from a berth in the all-Ontario Hock- ey finals. The Port squad holds a 2-0 lead in games over Midland Le- gion in this best of five series. Game three is set for this coming Friday night, 8:00 PM at the Scugog Arena and you can just bet the Port players will be working as hard as they can for the series sweep. Game one was Saturday in Midland with the Port Midgets hangingon for an 8-7 victory. At one point in this game, Port enjoyed a comfortable 7-4 lead but Midland made a game ofitin the final period. Injuries have hurt Port Perry this season and the team went into the Midland contest with just ten skaters in the line- up. Jeff Parry sparked the team on the score-sheet with three goals and two assists, in- cluding the goal early in the third that proved to be the game winner. season with so many serious in- juries: broken ankles, torn knees, separated shoulders, muscle pulls and the usual as- sortment of strains and bruises. Injuries are part of the game, but it's tough to win against teams like Bowman- ville with so many key players out of the line-up or playing hurt. The MoJacks had plenty of chances in this series. The two key games were the 5-4 loss in OT on home ice and the loss by the same score also on home ice last Wednesday night. I guess when all is said and done it just wasn't in the cards for the green and white this sea- son. With several players lost next season to over-age, the Mo- Jacks will be in a re-building phase. Though I would have liked to see this season continue with a series against Uxbridge, I want to offer my personal con- gratulations to all the players on the MoJacks. As for the final series be- tween Uxbriddge and Bowman- ville, the Eagles have taken a 1- 0 lead with a 9-8 win Sunday night on home ice. Junior C fans take not that game two and game three are Tuesday and Friday evenings in Uxbridge with face-off set for 8:00 PM. volleyball team win gold af DYSSA Tops in Durham/York The Port Perry High School Midget girls' volleyball team captured the DYSSA crown last Friday defeating Brock High School in the final. For Midland, Sean Lavin had two goals. The series moved to the Scugog Arena Sunday evening for game two, and Port Perry early struck early, then held on for a 5-4 win. Coach Doug Scott was able to lengthen the bench for this one, calling up four members of the Port Bantam squad. Port wasted little time get- ting on the board in this one as Gervan Stynyk, Jeff Parry and Jason Cochrane scored to open a 3-0lead. But Midland's Sean Lavin who sports number 3, clicked twice in the middle frame to make the score close. Stynyk, with his second of the night early in the third gave Port a two-goal bulge. And they would need it as Lavin clicked again for a hat trick. Jeff Card, one of the four Bantams in the line-up got what proved to be the winner off a pass from Stynyk in the final period. That made it 5-3 and Mid- land tallied again late in the pe- riod to make the final two min- utes interesting. Port had a wide margin of play in the early stages of the game. The score could have been much higher were it not Local skater for the work of Jason Nichol in the Midland net. Matt Willetts tended to the goal-keeping chores in both vic- tories for Port Perry. Don't forget Friday's game at 8:00 PM at the Scugog Arena. Come on out and help cheer these guys to a berth in the all- Ontario championships. fo compete in Ontario Championships Jennifer Berry of the Port Perry Figure Skating Club has qualified for the Ontario cham- pionships in preliminary dance. The 11-year old with part- ner Timothy Fowler of the Lakefield Skating Club, earned a silver medal at the Eastern Ontario championship held over the weekend in Belleville. Jennifer and Timothy were a single point behind the gold medal winning pair from King- ston. They have been skating as a team for the last six months and practise at Lindsay and Port Perry. In the dance competition over the weekend, the skaters did not know know until the day of the finals which two dances they would be asked to perform. The Ontario championship will be held March 17 in Bow- manville.
