In a sport where success is often measured in inches, the Port Perry entry in the Ontario School Boy Curling finals came about as close to gold as possi- ble. But the team of Jason Guindon, Rob Mitchell, Ian Thompson and Mike Flynn had to settle for silver as they went down to defeat on the final rock of an extra end in the Ontario spiel held in Cornwall the week- end of February 22-24. Not that there is anything too shabby about being runner- up. After all, 192 Ontario school boy teams started this competi- tion, and it came down to the top eight for all the marbles in Cornwall. But being so close to the gold, sure this foursome was disappointed. They lost to Smiths Falls in the final with the Port entry ty- ing the match in the 9th, and then catching a break in the 10th as their oppoents missed a "free draw" shot. But with the hammer in the 11th, the Smiths Falls skip had an open take-out with his last stone, and he wasn't about tolet this one get away. "The Smiths Falls team was very strong, they were full marks for the victory," said Port Perry coach Wayne Medford last week. And about his own team he had this to say: "I am very pleased with their effort. This team has come a long way this season." Just getting to the Ontario championship round was quite an achievement. The team had some memorable wins during eliminations rounds. And after losing their first match at Cornwall (to Smiths Falls 9-4) they had to curl smart and tough the rest of the way to even have a shot at the gold. They doubled tilbury 8-4, then got a real "pick-me-up" vic- tory 7-5 over Orangeville when Guindon was forced to make an angle-raise take-out in the final end to score four. "That win really gave us all a bigboost," he said later. It also put them into the semis against a previously un- defeated team from Lorne Park School in Toronto. Both teams took a cautious, hesitant approach to this match and the result was a low-scoring affair that went to an extra end. Holding the hammer, Guindon again won it with final rock, executing a draw around a guard that just nosed out the opposition's counting rock for a 5-4 victory. Playing in an Ontario championship was quite a thrill in itself.
