NO -- 55 22 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 5,1 "EE The Port Perry High School Midget Girls Volleyball team fought their way to victory over some stiff competition last Friday. The Port team came away with a well deserved gold medal in the DYSSA finals. See story on Sports front page for details. Novice playoff action The Port Perry Novice '"'Auc- tions" team have completed a very tough playoff series against their Stouffville counterparts. On Feb. 25th at home we came out on the short end of a 2-1 score as the visitors played a good defensive game that stone-walled our shooters repeatedly. Our lone goal was by Ryan McQuade from Brad Johnston. Playing well for the 'Auctions' was Scott Brownson, Bob Cowie, Chad Lance and Jeremy Heyworth. Stouffville went on to win the playoff series on Feb. 28 with a 3-1 home victory that was not reflec- wh -- TI p-- " Running Boards $69.95 & Up " Bug Shields $19.95 " Installations 2 price " Box Liners $219.95 & Up * Truck Caps starting at $399.95 VAN & TRUCK WORLD ACCESSORIES & INSTALLATION March Madness A 20% to 50% OFF MARCH 1st - 30st, 1991 * Captain Chairs & Sofas - 50% Off * Moulded Hood Guards from $39.95 tive of the play. The "Auctions" dominated play through a majori- ty of the game but were repeated- ly turned away by Brad Miller in goal for Stouffville. Our efforts were finally rewarded by a goal scored by Greg Bruton from Scott Brownson and Ryan McQuade. On nummerous other oppor- tunities "near-misses" held us off the score sheet. Jeff Ashton, Kam Cooper and the rest of the team played their hearts out in a losing effort that all could be proud of. Over the course of the season the calibre of our team play has steadily improved and we look forward to three more tour- naments to close out the season. » -- 7 / Petite A's off to Provincials What began as a dream last September, was a possibility in December and became a reality February 24 with a decisive vic- tory over Oshawa 4-1. The Col- dwell Banker Petite 'A' team will represent Ontario's Central Region at the All-Ontario Finals in Northbay this Easter Weekend. The competition during the preliminaries was tough. Each game tested Port's girls to the limit, along with the coaching staff. Our parents and fans were treated to nailbiters in the first 3 games but Port Perry drive and desire impressed everyone, even the opposition. The opening game saw Port's Petite "*A"s score twice within 3 minutes: Cara Vander Slagt from Cindy Verschuuren and Shona Moase netted No. 1; Dana Hooker scored the eventual winner from Laura Hooker and Janine Ham- mond. Only one shot escaped Katie Senyk who was superb in net. Brooke Shanley was a stan- dout at red stick this game. Port Perry 2 - Whitby 1. Along came an Ajax team ready to steal our North Bay plans. A vastly improved Ajax squad held the Coldwell Banker girls 2-2. In the last minute Janine Hammond dented the mesh on a beautiful pass from Laura Hooker. Other goal scorers: Shona from Dana, and Laura unassisted. The playmaking of Alechia Cracknell and Bonni-Jo Norton frustrated the Ajax of- fence time and time again. Port Perry 3 - Ajax 2. The same day brought a Pickering team to Oakwood to challenge the Port Perry Petite "A"s. Quickly Dana Hooker open- ed the scoring but the next 3 goals belonged to Pickering. Dreams of the North Bay challenge dimmed. Then Cindy Verschuuren's relentless checking and pinpoint passing found Shona Moase in alone in front of the Pickering net! After deking the goalie and hitting the post, Shona casually picked up the rebound, firing the blue ring over a sprawling goaltender. Thanks, Brooke for this assist. The comeback was completed by Janine Hammond who has made a habit of scoring decisive goals, and now tied it up. Katie Senyk was extremely sharp in those last 5 minutes, stopping 2 breakaways. Port Perry 4 - Pickering 4. "A WIN & WE'RE IN!" These words echoed across the dressing room. Before facing Oshawa, the girls were sky-high and waiting for Janine"s arrival! A strategy change was in order. Coach Senyk put Shona on red stick and Janna Senyk on blue stick. Janna responded with what was the game winner. Backchecking, never quitting and sharp passing showed the fans that Port's girls were not to be beaten. Port Perry 4 - Oshawa 1. Each girl dug deep down, giv- ing 110 per cent in this game. The extra effort shown by Cara Vander Slagt was just one exam- ple! Dana Hooker got a goa: and assist. Janine Hammond assisted on both of Laura Hooker's goals. Bonni-Jo Norton and Brooke Shanley also earned assists. This win assured the Coldwell Banker Petites at least a tie! At 9:30 pm, February 24 an excited Joan Poppleton phoned Coach Senyk. Whitby had tied Pickering. Port Perry Petite '"'A"s had won the preliminaries and were plan- ning their North Bay encounter. This achievement wouldn't have been possible without the in- spiration of the coaches: Walter Senyk, Dianne Hooker, Brian Shanley. The support and cooperation of the parents has been outstanding - thank you! Port's Petite '""A"s played 2 league games this weekend - con- fidently but without "swelled heads'. Two more games were put into the win column. The Col- dwell Banker Petites unleashed Janna Senyk once again with a blue stick to set up Shona Moase's 3 goals. Laura Hooker continued her torrid scoring by adding a goal from Janine's pass. With on- ly 3 red sticks, Alechia, Bonni-Jo and Brooke responded with gusto. Port Perry 4 - Whitby 1. Dana Hooker played a great game Sunday with a goal and 2 assists against Pickering. Shona Moase played all positions in this game except goal, scoring on a power play. Jennifer Elliott wac asked to play and she did very well. With a bit of luck she might have scored several times. Laura Hooker netted another and Janine Hammond added 2 assists. Alechia Cracknell was very pro- ud of her assist on the final goal - a picturesque passing play. Port Perry 3 - Pickering 1. A busy March lies ahead for Port Perry's Coldwell Banker Petite "*A" team. Upcoming is a tournament in Barrie and the On- tario Provincial Championship! These girls are deserving representatives of the Central Region. P.S. Congratulations to Port Perry's Novice team for their gold medal victory. Bantams one win away from finals The Port Perry Sportsland Ban- tams moved to within one game of advancing to the O.M.H.A. finals with a pair of wins over En- nisgore last week. The series opened at home and Port dominated the first period but could not score. Todd Smart finally got things going early in the second, banging home a goal off setups by Chad Kearns and Mark Cosway. Sportsland continued to carry the play, but the 1-0 score held up until Kearns counted one from a scramble near the middle of the final period, the assist to Steve Desautels. A minute later Chad Garvock made it 3-0 on a nice pass from Jason Coutoulakis. Jeremy Norton made the rush to start the play. After Ennismore picked up one goal, Desautels polished off the 4-1 win with any empty-net goal. Nor- ton picked up his second assist on the goal. Mike Pashley wasn't busy, but had to be sharp at times to earn the win. Only 5 penalties were handed out in the mild-mannered game. The return engagement in En- nismore went to the opposite ex- treme, with almost 50 minutes served in the sin bin, and some peripheral excitement to boot. Sportsland still emerged as the dominant team, as Kearns scored one early after Smart and Blair Prechitko teamed up to send him in. Kearns added his second later in the period, firing Lou Whit- field's passout into the net. Smart also assisted on the goal. Port opened up a 4-0 advantage in the second when Coutoulakis finished off a play from Garvock, then Scott Heasman went coast- to-coast for* an unassisted marker. Ennismore broke Pashley's goose-egg early in the third, but five minutes later Smart com- pleted a bang-bang play with Nor- ton and Kearns, when he tipped Jeremy's blast in from the edge of the crease. The 5-1 final leaves - Port in a position to possibly end the series on Wednesday at the Scugog Arena. The boys will be glad of your support as they continue on their quest for an Ontario championship. Atom house league Everyone has been gearing up for the play-offs!!! With these two fine teams it didn't take long for them to get right at it. Just 1:21 into the first period Gavin Baxter hit Chris Jamieson with a pass that was right on the money and Jamieson unleashed a wicked shot that beat the Scugog Lumber goalie clearly to give the Whitby Auto Wreckers the early lead 1-0. Both teams played hard for the remainder of the first period but there was no more scoring due to some fine goaltending at both ends of the rink. The second period got off to a quick start when Jay Fletcher put a pass in front of the Scugog goal and Chris Jamieson redirected it into the far corner to give Whitby atwo goal lead. One minute later at the 8:51 mark. Big Luke Newman threw a pass into the slot to Chris Jamieson and thank you very much he had his hat- trick. With the second period winding down and just 2:41 left, Chris Jamieson put a pass on Jay Flet- cher's stick as he split the defence and was in all alone on a breakaway. With a good move he drew the goalie out and slid the puck into the open net to make the score 4-0 for Whitby Auto Wreckers. With almost no time left in the second period, Kevin Edwards picked up a loose puck in his own end, up to Mark Sauter who hit Aaron Levy with a perfect pass and Aaron was in on the Whitby goalie, all alone and with a nice head fake tucked it under a sliding Whitby goalie to close the gap to 4-1 after two periods of play. The third period had the spec- tators sitting on the edge of their seats for most of the period. Both teams had some nice rushes and both goalies had to be sharp to keep the sharp-shooters off the score sheet. With just 33.8 seconds left in the game Adam Brain fed Chris Jamieson in the slot over to Gavin Baxter who unloaded a quick shot into the open corner to end the game with the Whitby Auto Wreckers defeating Scugog Lumber by a score of 5-1. Playing in goal for Whitby Auto Wreckers was Ryan Puckrin and Jonathon Froats was in goal for Scugog Lumber. Honourable Mention for good hustle goes to Ben Shephenson for Whitby and for Scugog Justin Sheehey (CAT)!! Honourable Mention for good defensive effort goes to Kevin Ed- wards for Scugog Lumber and Chris Orr for Whitby. A Ar GE GEIS JAP, nr,
