Junior ringette The final game of the Juniors' Pre-lims took place Wednesday, February 27 at the Don Beer Arena in Pickering. It was a 'do or die' situation for the Port Perry girls as this game was the final decision maker as to which team would travel to North Bay to par- ticipate in the Provincials. The game proved to be very tense, especially for the fans who were kept on the edge of their seats as the score seesawed back and forth. Both teams were equal- ly determined that they were go- ing to be the one to emerge vic- torious. ' For every goal Port scored in the first period Pickering answered with one of their own. As the buzzer sounded to end the period the score was tied 3-3, Kim Poppleton, Karen Kett and Lynd- say Dutkewich were responsible for Port Perry's goals with assists going to Jennifer Morden, Karen Kett, Jennifer Josephson, Megan Marlowe and Lyndsay Dutkewich. During the second period Pickering pulled ahead by a score of 5-3 giving the fans several anx- ious moments. Suddenly Port Perry went into overdrive witn Six minutes remaining in the game. Hard work and determina- tion resulted in five additional goals for the Juniors. There were several intense seconds during the last two minutes when Port took two penalties: one white and one red. Jennifer Morden and Tracy Pelow were left alone to fend off Pickering's attackers. The two girls put in a top perfor- mance and held Pickering in check very well. After thirty minutes Port Perry emerged as the victors by a score of 8-6. Kim Poppleton scored twice in the final period with singles going to Denna Lovering, Karen Kett and Lyndsay Dutkewich. Assists were awarded to Kim Poppleton, Dawn Doucette and Jennifer Josephson. Karen Kett had three assists and Megan Marlowe, who put her red stick to good use, clearing the ring very effectively, earning herself a total of five assists. The Juniors have now earned the right to travel to the Provin- cials and are looking forward to meeting their opposition in North Bay. Evans | Ruminant Research Specialist |' Shur- Gain The most critical feeding period in the production cycle of a cow is, surprisingly, the dry period. By correctly feeding cows during the dry period, a number of metabolic disorders can be minimized. Shur-Gain has concentrated significant research activities towards improving dry cow feeding in order to help producers minimize metabolic and reproductive problems in their dairy herds. Healthy cows produce greater quantities of milk and achieve better reproductive performance than cows that have suffered from an illness. Proper feeding alone will not guarantee a disease- free herd, but it will help improve disease status. For example, mineral balance in the dry period is essential to avoiding milk fever, which generally occurs shortly before or after calving. Milk fever is easily treated, but it often leaves cows susceptible to other problems such as difficult calving, retained placenta or uterine infection. Milk fever at any time increases the risk of displaced abomasum and mastitis, and lowers conception rate. Ketosis is the result of a severe energy deficiency which has been associated with poor. reproductive efficiency. Shur-Gain studies show that proper dry cow feeding helps to prevent ketosis by maximizing body energy and protein reserves. The reserves help prevent cows from experiencing sudden, severe energy deficiencies. Dry cows need as much attention and care as cows in the milking string. The payback will be reductions in feed-related diseases and reproductive disorders. Shur-Gain Products are available at the following dealers: H & M WRIGHT FEED CO.
