Tweens lose 6-4 final to Whitby The final game in the preliminaries played between the Whitby "A" Tweens and The Allen's Siding 'A' Tweens was last Tuesday at Iroquois Park. At the shrill sound of the referee's whistle Whitby got the free pass which our defence pick- ed up immediately. Amy Parlia- ment picked up the ring, passing it over to Brandy Harris. Brandy held on to the ring, then saw her chance to pass it over to Deanna. At 14:00 in the first period Dean- na scored the first goal. Whitby retaliated with two goals before Amy tied up the score with a goal assisted by Heather Lally and Brandy Harris. The score was 2-2 at the end of the first half. Whitby certainly put the pressure on in the second half and it appeared our fate was doomed. The game ended Whitby 6, Port Perry 4. Leea Kinnunen must be made of the right stuff as, after breaking her collarbone in a Pickering tournament three weeks previous, she was back in the game. Glad to have you back . on the ice again, Leea. Amy scored two more goals in the game, assisted by Deanna, IF YOUR AD WAS HERE Over 20,000 people could have read it this week. Best Wishes to the Whitby Tweens as they travel to North Bay at the end of the month of play in the Provincials. League Game vs Ajax Back to regular league play on Saturday evening as we faced the Ajax Tweens. Coach Lally and Manager Coyne switched the playing positions of the girls to make it a more fun game after the pressures of the prelims. Brandy played in net giving Sarah Coyne the opportunity to play blue stick. Ajax scored within the first ten seconds but Amy retaliated with a goal twenty seconds later, assisted by Leea and Sarah. One minute later Ajax scored again but we followed suit with a goal from Sarah, assisted by Lisa. At the end of the game Ajax won, 6-4. Amanda Webb scored two more goals for Port with assists from Heather Lally, Kyla McCrae and Deanna Dempsey. Our next game is this Saturday evening as we face the tweens from Barrie at 6:30 p.m. on home ice. Nancy Coyne and Marge Dempsey will be managing the team play while coach Dan Lally and wife Wendy will be basking in the Florida sun. Good luck girls! PENG Commissioner of Works PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 5, 1991 -- 25 Four Port Perry Junior A ringette players have been selected to play on the Central Re- gion All Star Team in the Ontario Winter Games. The games, which are held every other year, are slated for March 6-10 in Barrie and Collingwood. The ringette competition at the games will be held in the form of a tournament with All Star Teams from five of the six On- tario ringette regions. The tournament will be held at the Allendale Sports Complex on Fri- day, March 8 and Saturday, March 9 with the championship games on Sunday, March 10. Pictured above (from left) are local selected players on the Central Region All Star Team: Shannon Fox, Denna Lovering, Megan Marlowe and Kim Poppleton. Midgets up two games in series The Port Perry Canadian Tire Midget B team played a really strong game to defeat Prince Ed- ward County in the first game of a best 3 of 4 series. In the first period both teams jockeyed for control with the op- position scoring the first goal mid- 'way in the period. It was obvious the home town crew would really have their work cut out for them. They soon evened things up when Stuart Dyer fired one in the net assisted by Nathan Brown and David Volman. Prince Edward pulled ahead but Port Perry came from behind to tie it again on a solo effort by Darrell Vanderligt. The next goal was scored by Canadian Tire"s Brad Moase following super passing plays from Jason McBride and Scott Airey. Not to be outdone the visitors tied it up again. Stuart Dyer shot the puck into the corner and Craig Leask fought for con- trol, then he put it right on Mark Andrew's stick in front of the net. Mark one timed it in to put Port Perry ahead 5-4. They never looked back and the team settled down to play their kind of game - fast, physical and sure. Mark Andrews tallied his se- cond of the game when he took a nice drop pass from Ryan Picard who had picked up the puck from Darrell Vanderligt. Like many of the goals scored by this team it was a co-operative effort with a quick, smooth 1, 2, 3 - and in the net! The team responded well to the between periods break and came out for the 3rd with a 5-4 lead but more importantly the calm deter- mination to increase their margin Stuart Dyer scored midway in the period assisted by Craig Leask and Mark Andrews. The final goal was notched on sheer determina- tion as the forward line relentless- ly put the pressure on the opposi- tion's goalie. Scott Menzies found the mark assisted by Jason McBride to put the final score at 7-4. Defensive strategy was crucial in this game and Prince Edward County capitalized 3 times when Port Perry pressed in a little too tight. Once they realized that they had to keep a close eye on the cen- tre ice floaters they virtually shut them down. Noah St. Amand was very effective using his cool poke check but once had to sacrifice a penalty in a successful effort to avert a breakaway. Mike Tripp in net was absolutely great! This was the toughest going game for the whole squad but Mike was really put to the test. Our "Phan- tom Bantam" has really been an asset to the team and the whole crew is glad to have him aboard. The team had to travel to Well- ington (near Picton) to play the 2nd game on Sunday, March 4 for a 6 p.m. game. Noel Lovering was in net and made some excellent stops. The 2 goals in the first period were both by Brad Moase, with one assisted by Noah St. Amand and the other by Jason McBride. The second period was end to end action with both goalies mak- ing a lot of good saves, keeping it scoreless. True to form the Cana- dian Tire squad came out in the 3rd period ready to roll. The Prince Edward County team just On Feb. 28 the Pineridge Atom No. 2 team took on Oshawa Black Hawks of the L.N.H.L. at the Port arena. In a very entertaining game the Oshawa Club prevailed by a score of 4-2. They took the lead in the first but Port came back in the second as Justin Halligan set Adam Hobbs loose on a breakaway. Adam gave the goalie no chance as he slid the puck home. ~couldn't keep up as they were out skated and worn down. Scoring for Port Perry were Stuart Dyer with 2, Jason McBride 1, Craig Leask 1, and Scott Airey 1. Assists went to Dar- rell Vander Slagt 2, Noah St. Amand 2, Mark Andrews 2, Jason McBride 1, Brad Moase 2, Scott Airey 1 and David Volman 1. The team was really up to the demands of this tough physical game and are looking forward to the 3rd match versus Prince Edward. The final 7-2 victory for Port Perry puts them within 1 game of securing a finalist position in the All Ontario Championship. The next game will be in Wellington on Tuesday March 5 at 7:30 p.m. Atom 2 update Oshawa once again took the lead in the second but Port would not give up as Adam Hobbs scored his second of the night as he picked up a loose puck in front of the net and scored. Hard earned assists to Scott Sanderson and Justin Halligan whose strong forechecking set up the goal. Oshawa scored their last two goals in the third to round out the scoring. Junior ringette From Page 24 The following Saturday Port Perry went up against a strong hard checking team from Mississauga. Port seemed to have trouble getting into high gear and as a result the first period ended with the score reading 3-1 in Mississauga favour. Kim Pop- pleton scored Port's lone marker on a pass from Jennifer Josephson. With only one minute gone in the second period Mississauga scored again to lead 4-1. Port Perry continued to press on, and with only three minutes remain- ing, scored two quick goals. Lynd- say Dutkewich, assisted by Karen Kett, scored Port's second goal and with only one second remain- ing on the clock. a nice pass from Megan Marlowe enabled Jennifer Josephson to score Port's third goal. The final score Mississauga 4 - Port Perry 3. Sunday, Port Perry faced off against Markham. The Juniors were able to capitalize on many of their scoring opportunities to score a total of nine goals. Kim Poppleton scored four of those goals, as well as earning two assists. Karen Kett scored two goals and earned two assists. In- dividual markers went to Jennifer Josephson, Denna Lovering and Megan Marlowe. Additional assists went to Val Payne, Jen- nifer Josephson, Megan Marlowe and Denna Lovering. The girls ex- ecuted some very nicely set up passing plays and for their efforts they emerged the winners by a score of 9-4. A very welcome ad- dition to the line-up for the weekend games was Shannon Fox. It was a definite plus for the team to have Shannon back on red stick.
