The compromise was reached at the Association's general meeting in Port Perry Feb. 26; a meeting attended by a large number of angry par- ents, coaches and softball exec- utive from Seagrave and Green- bank. "Please give us a chance to come up with a compromise and we can work these problems out. But let us keep out local or- ganizations," said Doug Demp- sey of Seagrave. Mr. Dempsey, who outlined the issue in a letter to the editor in the Feb. 26 issue of the Port Perry Star, was one of many persons from Greenbank and Seagrave who spoke out against the plans by Port Perry Minor Softball. | Essentially, Port Perry Mi- nor Softball passed a resolution at its annual meeting last Octo- ber 14 stating that for the 1991 house league season, any player wishing to play softball with the Port Perry Assoc. would have to register with the Assoc. For many years, children in Greenbank and Seagrave regis- tered with their own organiza- tions, formed their own commu- nity teams, but were permitted to play in the Port Perry Assoc. House Leagues. The decision last October Vv THE YMCA DURHAM REGION ---h WN CONS YOUTH and ADULT PROGRAMS meant those children would register this season directly with the Port Perry Assoc. and be assigned to teams outside their own communities. Port Perry Softball presi- dent Carolyn Best told the meeting last week the executive decision of last October came af- ter three hours of intense dis- cussion. And she said the reason for it was to attempt to reach pari- ty among the teams, i.e., all house league teams being of close to the same strength and abilities. Mrs. Best said there have been a couple of teams from Greenbank and Seagrave last year that were so strong, chil- dren on other teams com- plained they had no chance of winning and in some instances simply did not want to play those teams. "The kids were not having any fun, and if they are not hav- ing fun, then we (the Assoc.) is doing something wrong," she told the meeting. "It was the executive's deci- sion to put all the players under the one umbrella (of Port Perry Minor Softball) she said. Parents and coaches from Greenbank and Seagrave argued that the loss of their own teams would dampen com- munity pride and would essen- tially mean the loss of the minor softball organizations that have enjoyed a long history in the two towns. But they also said they rec- ognized Minor Softball's need PORT PERRY OFFICE, 269 QUEEN ST, PORT PERRY, ONTARIO YMCA SPRING LINE-UP "r'=" Spring is on the way and so is our new line-up of springtime programs which will be starting the first week of April.
