22 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 12, 1991 A couple of weeks ago while Helen Redman was entertaining the Golden Slippers at her home, a gentleman from U.S. arrived at the door and said he was the son of the late Lydia Redman who had lived at the "Head" of the Island. She had told him so many stories of the Island and some of their relatives, he was interested in making contacts. On Wednesday evening of last week 13 ladies met at the home of Helen Redman for the St. Patrick's U.C.W. meeting. Helen likes to open her home for the SPECIAL ... PORT PERRY 985-9500 March meeting so she can add some extra touches to celebrate St. Patricks. It was also a welcome to the new addition to the Redman home which has housed four generations and has required several building projects during that time. The roll call suggested that the ladies name their favourite Easter treat. The younger members still thought of Easter eggs while the older ones would appreciate a change in Easter meal serving. Of course the Devotions centered around preparations for Easter in John's baptism of Jesus and our worship in study, song and prayer. There were apprecia- tion messages from the family of the late Mrs. Elva Martyn and from ladies who received quilting services. It seemed appropriate at this time to show some quilts of the past and future. Freida Cochrane's quilt was made up of '1100 pieces. At this time also, many lovely crafts were submit- ted for the craft and bake sale in April. A guest, Lynn Rogers, gave details of a big celebration in 4 area United Churches during the weekend of March 23, 24, 25 when Rev. Kwan-il Lee of Korea, who has been hired by Presbytery to visit different areas, Port Perry and Scugog during Palm Sunday period. Korea has the fastest growing Christian Church. Canada is not now considered a Christian Coun- try. So we have lots to learn at 3 pot luck meals and meetings which will also include children. We'll give you more details later. In 1995 Korea will celebrate its freedom from Japanese domina- tion and wishes tp have 2300 rib- bons, from world churches, to stretch 1000 km. from mt. top to mt. top. If anyone is interested in demonstrating a craft or showing completed craft at the April craft & bake sale, please contact any member of the "Head" U.C.W. Various groups love to plan bus trips and not the least of these is the "Head" U.C.W. and guess where -- our own Island with its various roads, historic areas and beaches. Its a 4 hr. trip in a 40 seat bus with lunch at the Islander, all for $15. Information will be given along the route. All Island U.C.W. ladies, as well as Institute members are considered first. So please send your name to Mrs. Helen Redman 985-8168 by the end of March. After that the seats are open for any lady or gentleman. The trip starts at 10 a.m. - Mon- day, June 3. Freida Cochrane recently reported a trip to Peterborough when she called on Marion Hughes & her husband. She was Crafty people wanted by the Head UCW very pleased to find Marion in good spirits as usual and looking well after her surgery. We were pleased to have Beryl Pearce at our meeting again but sorry to learn she was recovering from the effects of a head on col- lision in Florida a short time after they had begun their vacation. So far it's beautiful weather to enjoy the March Break from school. Saturday was also an ideal day for the Scugog search for 2 miss- ing girls. During its history, the Methodist Church depended on lay preachers, who, working under a minister superintendent, took turns at conducting services and preaching in various chapels. On Sunday, a lay preacher ar- rived too early for the service but entering the church and seeing in the vestibule a collection plate, put in half a crown. After the ser- vice he was visited by the deacons in the vestry and thanked for his service. 'Oh, by the way," added one, 'we have a plate in the vestibule for the preacher's expenses and this morning we found a half- crown in it. It is yours." So the preacher received back his own half-crown. That afternoon, at the tea table, the lay preacher told the family about that day's service and add- ed the tale of his half-crown ex- penses. The joke against Dad was greeted with loud laughter. Until the youngest of the children piped up, 'But, Daddy, don't you see, if . you had put more in you would have got more out." Surely a moral there for friend- ship, love, service and our daily work. Theresa Wood and her husband have several great nephews but are still pleased to welcome another, March 4, Jeffrey Eric Olsen of Ajax. Have you heard that the Island congregation of the Scugog United is making plans for an ad- dition to the west side of the church to house a new minister/secretary office and a nursery/meeting room? Of course, this will require addi- tional funds, a challenge to be met by the stewards. We trust you will support their endeavours. Accordingly, the stewards are starting off next Sunday, March 17 with a "St. Patrick's"' Brunch at 11:30 a.m. Please try to be there at the Township Hall. Many people are now neglec- ting to wear their name tags. It would be especially helpful to wear them for a social time. Some might find it more helpful to take them home and pin them on when preparing for church. On Sunday everyone was pleas- ed to receive a 6th edition of "The Bridge." The new minister Elaine Barber, opens her heart & thoughts to all & welcomes sug- gestions. She deserves your support. It seems that this newsletter or booklet is getting better as it describes the work done by dif- ferent organizations while the pages are decorated with ap- propriate little sketches. We are amazed with the talent and will- ingness within this church. It looks like full days ahead. Please keep your enclosed "Time Table." The list of members with their children's names along with a responsible elder makes it seem like a real big family drawn together. "The Bridge' is really a treasure. The Women's Institute will meet March 20. Ladies Bible Class meets Wednesday, March 13 A happy and safe holiday to all those out enjoying the spring break. Happy birthday to all those celebrating birthdays this month. The Eleanor Knight Group of the Women's Missionary Society met at the home of Chrissie McKinney last Wednesday with 9 ladies present. Chrissie conducted the worship service, opening the meeting with O Master Let Me Walk with Thee. Portions of St. Mark 16 were read. Bernice Gard- ner was in charge of the study. She spoke about Mrs. Lillian FORDER-PARKS INSURANCE BROKERS INC. 34 Water St., Port Perry, Ont. John and Betty Cincurak recently returned from St. Vin- cent and the Grenadines where they participated in two work/play tours. The work pro- jects were on the islands of Canovan and St. Vincent. Both in- cluded painting the interiors of schools, the church house and a new church building and com- munity centre. John and his friend, Jim Stockall flew back to Canovan to wire the church, St. Michael and All Angels, for elec- tricity which will come to that island later this year. This was John and Betty's third trip back to the Grenadines and already are looking forward to a return trip. Doug and Florence Ashton had lunch with Lloyd and Margaret Pugh of Pickering last Tuesday. We extend our sincere sym- pathy to Glen and Joan Fleming and family in the passing of Glen's mother.
