24 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 12, 199] Midget B squad off to All-Ontario Finals The Canadian Tire Midget B team has advanced to the All On- tario Finals. = In what was probably the most exciting, nerve-jangling game of the season the Port Perry squad defeated Wellington to win the Eastern Ontario Division. The first 2 games were decisive victories for Port Perry but game three was a real upset. On Tuesday March 5, the team travelled to Wellington with a bus load of enthusiastic fans. To say Lady Luck was not along for the ride was an understatement. Wellington fans were out in full force and the team was pumped. They opened the scoring early and added another before Port Perry got on the scoreboard with and unassisted goal by Darrell Vander Slagt. In the second period the Wellington team notch- ed 2 more and in the third another 2. Port Perry forwards hit the post, hit the goalie and did everything but put one in. This was just not their night. It was almost as hard to get a bite to eat as it was a goal. Hungry, tired and disappointed they head- ed home. O.T. Thriller Game 4 was a different story but nobody could have called this one. Wellington arrived on Thurs- day evening, March 7 knowing they had to win or be put out. The first 2 goals were scored by the visitors within 9 seconds of each other in the middle of the first period - one on a really upsetting deflection. The Canadian Tire team managed one of their own when Jason McBride fired the puck in assisted by Brad Moase. Stuart Dyer was next to tally to tie the game, assisted by Mark Andrews and Craig Leask. The Port Perry squad pulled ahead in the first minute of the se- cond period when Brad Moase found the mark assisted by Dave Volman. It took just 2 minutes when the Canadian Tire squad had a bit of a breakdown and the Wellington team had 3 goals to their credit on the scoreboard. It was sure time for a chance to regroup while the ice was flood- ed between periods. Cole Parry "calmly" discussed the situation with the team as did coaches Williams and Thompson. A very determined team emerg- ed from the dressing room. Well- ington wanted to guard their lead and would have worn down a less formidable foe. But the Port Perry Canadian Tire Midget B's had no intention of giving up, and were "Not Go- ing To Take It". Every shift, every player, every shot was 110 per cent. They literally grew stronger and stronger as the minu'es ticked by. With 1:20 left in the game and Wellington still leading 5-3 it was definitely time for coaching strategy to make the difference. Noel Lovering had been playing a great game in net but it was time to pull him and go with six skaters. The crowd went wild as Brad Moase scored at the 1:02 mark assisted by Darrell Vander Slagt. The Canadian Tire team was still behind and as the seconds zipped by on the clock it looked like it might be over. True to form the home town team just would not give up. With less than 1 second left, Craig Leask got one by the goalie to tie the game, assisted by Nathan Brown and Jason McBride. It's frequently been said that this team is strongest in the third period, but just put them into overtime and watch them fly. The Wellington team didn't stand a chance as they watched 3 more goals go up on the scoreboard for Port Perry. The go ahead goal was scored by Craig Leask just 59 seconds in- to overtime, assisted by Darrell Vanderlight and Mark Andrews. This line was absolutely great and 3 minutes later Craig put the ic- ing on the cake to score again assisted by Mark Andrews. The final and 8th goal was scored by Nathan Brown right in- to the centre of an empty net from his own blue line, with goalie Noel Lovering getting the assist. : This hard fought series brought + out the best in the team both of- fensively and defensively. We're looking for the team to stay in top form as they advance to the All Ontario's. The opponents will be Petrolia and the series will start this weekend. Watch for posters at the Arena for game times. the series) This team from Stroud Curling Club captured the D.J. Taylor Insurance Mixed Bonspiel at the Port Perry Club on Saturday. And along the way, the team scored a rare eight- ender. From left are skip Art Hudell, Joe Asling, Doreen Asling and Erica Hudell. As for the eight-ender, Art had to make a tricky shot with his last rock to get it. None of the team members had ever scored an eight-ender before. The Port Perry Midget B squad (white jerseys) staged what has to be the comeback of the year last week at the Scugog Arena as they defeated Wellington to win a berth in the all-Ontario finals. The Port guys tied this game with virtually no time on the clock, then popped home three in the straight-ten OT period for the 8-5 win. (see story for details on Sweep semi-finals Sportsiand going to All-Ontario series Port Perry's Sportsland Ban- tams advanced to the O.M.H.A. championship series Wednesday night by beating Ennismore 8-1, finishing off a three game semi- final sweep. Sportsland dominated play from the outset, but had trouble beating a strong Ray Neilson in the Ennismore net. Scott Heasman finally broke the spell at 6:57. Jeremy Norton made a heads-up play to follow up Lou Whitfield's shoot-in and fed Heasman coming down the slot. Neilson actually made the first, save, but Heasman buried his own rebound. At 1:42 Steve Desautels finished off a strong forechecking effort by Chad Gar- vock and Jason Coutoulakis, banging in a short rebound. At 13:32 of the second it was Heasman again, following up heavy pressure by Chad Kearns and Mark Cosway to dunk another rebound. Neilson was left unassisted a lot of the time, with Port consistently beating the visitors to the loose pucks. Less than a minute after Heasman"s second goal, Ennismore got on the board to tighten the game at 3-1. Late in the period, Kearns pro- vided a little more cushion, tak- ing a Jason Phillips clearing pass and breaking in for a short- handed counter. Blair Prechitko, who turned in another strong game, settled the issue at 2:28 with another Phillips assist. Prechitko carried in from the point, circled the net, came back out to the slot, and finally fired a pinpoint screened shot behind Neilson. Port won going away in the third, adding three more goals. Desautels got his second at 11:50, another short shot from his favorite spot off the right post. Garvock and Phillips had the helpers. Then, at 1:30 Kearns picked up his second, firing a hard shot off Todd Smart's pass from the corner on a perfect give-and- go. Cosway was also in on the play. Garvock closed out the scor- ing at 1:01, making a super deflec- tion of Norton's point blast under Neilson's butterfly. James Patterson was not tested often between Port's pipes, but was steady when called on. Sportsland will now face the challenge of staying sharp and maintaining momentum through a layoff of about 10 days. Their 7 game playoff winning streak will be put to the test when they begin the final series this coming weekend. Their opponent will be a team from Strathroy. Two games will be played at the Scugog Arena, but the times had not been set as of deadline. Fans should watch for posters at the Arena towards the end of this week.
